Jamie arrived at exactly 5:15. I wore exactly what he asked- a green tank top and khaki shorts with tennis shoes. As I stepped up into his truck, Jamie stared me down. “”Hair?” He said, eyebrow raised.
I buckled my seat belt, “It’s cute right? A nice high ponytail.” My head shook allowing the hair to brush the back of my neck.
With a little chuckle, Jamie put the car in drive and we were off. I didn’t know where we were going but I secretly hoped it would take us awhile to arrive.
“How old are you?” Jamie questioned. Hadn’t we already had this discussion. I mean, we hadn’t gotten anywhere but…
“17,” I answered staring at his concentrating face. “How old are you?”
Jamie stayed silent until we turned down a street. “I’m nineteen today.”
I kept a straight face but my heart was pounding loudly in my chest. No one told it was his birthday. “Happy Birthday!” I tried to say enthusiastically. When he didn’t reply, I glanced at him.
Jamie’s elbow sat on the bottom of the window and his cheek was buried into his palm. His right hand was on the steering wheel.
“Are you not excited?”
Sighing, he repositioned himself up straight and ran his hand through his curly bangs.I watched as his finger got caught in a curl. “Hey, look!” Jamie suddenly said with widening eyes, “We’re here.” The car pulled off the road into an opening in the woods. My mom must have really trusted him to allow him to take me into woods.
Suddenly, the car came to a stop and Jamie shifted the gear into park. “Ready, Angel?” Was he seriously going to start calling me that now? I mean...not that I minded.
“Ready for what?” When he unbuckled his seat belt I followed him. “You still haven’t told me what we’re doing.”
Ignoring me, he hopped out of the truck and jogged to my side. “It’s my secret place.” He answered, after opening my door. As I stepped down, I got a small whiff of his cologne. I don’t know how I didn’t smell it cooped up in the truck with him.
“What secret spot?” I asked watching as he shut the door and wiped off his hands.
Unexpectedly, he leaned down close to my face. “It’s a secret, Angel.” After giving me a small wink, he back off a bit and looked up into the trees.
“Is it a tree house?” I looked up at the greenery as well. There was no site of a fort or anything at the top of the trees.
“Lets go,” Was all he said as he began walking away from the car.
