Part 19

On Monday it was back to school time. Charlie was starting 5 mornings in the nursery unit of the village school for his pre school year. He felt so important to be going to the same school as his big brother. Caroline shed a few tears as she sat in her car, then set off home.

Phyllis was stripping beds upstairs. Caroline began emptying the dish washer. She only ran it once a day after supper and did all the day's pots in one go.

She put on the radio while she worked. Music helped to energize her. Sara Cox on Radio one was chatting away to someone or other then came another song. It was one of Caroline's favourites. ' Ooh La La' by Gold Frapp. Dancing while she worked was a great   motivator.

In the orchard John had noticed that the Worcester apples and a number of William's pears were ready for picking. He fetched a basket from the kitchen and harvested them.

As he carried his wares to the house he saw Caroline's car was back in the drive way. Reaching the kitchen he saw Caroline dancing around while putting crockery, cutlery and cookware away. He watched her in rapt fascination until the song ended, and as she closed the cupboard door on a pile of cereal bowls he wolf whistled loudly.

Caroline's hand flew to her heart. ' Ooh you startled me. I nearly jumped out of my skin' she half scolded him.

He playfully pinched her bottom, then remembered his original reason for coming to the house. 'The apple and pear trees are doing us proud'. He showed her the fruit he'd brought.

Caroline smelled a pear and sank her teeth into it's juicy flesh, sighing with pleasure at the taste. A bead of juice trickled down her wrist and John licked it off followed by a drop on her chin.

' You're a naughty boy for distracting me like this'. Caroline cuffed his arm playfully.

'Hark at her!' John uttered in mock indignation. 'Cheeky madam, Dances round like Salome  and has the nerve to say I'M distracting'.

Another song began on the radio. John grinned. 'Now the power's that be are distracting us.

This song gives me goosebumps'.

It was Berlin singing 'Take my breath away' from Top Gun, 'I got a full on crush for Kelly McGillis after watching that film.' he admitted.

'Let's see if you can lay Kelly to rest shall we ?' He took the pear from Caroline's hand and put it on the table before kissing her with velvet artistry feeling weak kneed at the warm softness of her lips and tongue against his.

They were so caught up in the moment that they didn't notice Phyllis drop a pile of sheets at the kitchen door before beating a hasty retreat.

As the song ended they gently parted. ' What's Kelly's position now ?' Caroline asked.

' Kelly who ?' John beamed.

He felt himself slipping under the spell of her smiling blue eyes and jerked himself back with a shake of his head. '| need to get back to the garden or we'll not got any work done. Can I make a date with you for when the boys are in bed ?'

Caroline's answer was to fling her arms around him and place another generous kiss on his mouth before turning with a smile back to her work.

Phyllis was making lunch as Caroline's car pulled up in the drive disgorging herself and Charlie. He presented 'Auntie Phyllis' with a painting he'd done for her while Mummy put her own precious piece of art on the fridge door.

' Thank you pet', she said warmly. 'That's champion. Now would you do Auntie Phyllis a favour please and go to tell John and Rick that their lunch is ready'.
