The Guardian's Tale (AOT fanfiction)

-The night of the closing ceremony-

This night was the night that we got our results. The night that would decide if some of us got to live their dreams of going to the interior.

"GIVE YOUR HEARTS !" A man yelled and we all saluted. "You have three options after you graduate from the Cadets today. The Garrison Regiment, which reinforces the walls and protects each city. The Scout Regiment, which risks life and limb to venture into Titan territory, outside the walls. And the Military Police Regiment which serves under the king by policing the people and preserving order ! Of course, the only ones allowed to join the military police are the top 11 cadets who were previously named."

The 10 others and I proudly stood in a straight line. Some of us smiling, some of us looking straight ahead with a blank face. Mikasa and I had tied for first place and it happened to be the first time in history that 2 people tied.

"WHAT ?! Are you guys seriously not gonna join the Military Police Regiment ?" Thomas asked, looking at Eren and I, perplex. "Even after you got into the top 10 and all ?!"

"No...my mind was set since I was a child. After my brother and I lost our family, we were taken in and raised by the Scouts until he himself became one." I smiled at him. "I want to repay that debt and fight the titans head on to annihilate them all."

As Eren explained HIS reasoning, Thomas freaked out.

"WE CAN'T BEAT THEM !" He yelled, which silenced everyone in the mess hall. "Y-You know how many tens of thousands of people have been eaten so far ? The answer was clear after we lost 20% of our population. Humanity...can't beat the Titans. And Yuki...were those scars not enough to make you realize that ?" He pointed at my neck, then at my ankle.

As he said that, a gloomy atmosphere settled in the mess hall. Eren then gave us his usual motivational speech, saying he was going to drive out every single titan and I leaned back against the wall, stuffing my hands in my pockets. He then ran out and Armin, Mikasa and I went after him. As we sat on the stairs, Armin announced that he was going to join the Scout Regiment as well as Eren and I. Then came Mikasa, saying she would follow Eren because he would die an early death if she didn't. I smiled and she then looked at me.

"You too Yuki." She said with a faint smile. "I have to protect you as well."

"In your dreams." I grinned as I pulled her in for a hug.

The next day, we watched the Scouts leave to go outside the walls. I first caught Commander Erwin's eye and he smiled at me and gave me a small salute just like when I was a child. Then, I caught Captain Levi's gaze and I smiled and waved at him, receiving a small wave back as he immediately looked away. Jeez he was still as reluctant to show any affection as before. My heart warmed up when I heard people cheering for them instead of booing them like they had 5 years ago. Hannes then called out to us and congratulated us for graduating. I recognized him because he was one of the men who had found my brother and I all of those years ago. He leaned over and poked my forehead as a sign of greeting and I smiled.

"I'm sorry about your brother Yuki." He said holding back tears. "Genji was like a son to me."

"I..." I looked up at the sky. "It's alright...I think he's better off up there...flying and free just like the birds. He's always wanted that after all."

I waved at him and Eren and I raced each other to the wall.

"S-SAY WHAT ?" I yelled as we cleaned the canons. "Connie ! You were set on the military police !" 

"Sounds like Eren's speech yesterday won him over." A girl who's name I couldn't remember walked up to me.

"M-Mind your business ! I decided it on my own !" Connie said, embarrassed. 

Then, Thomas announced that he was going to join the Scouts as well. Just as I was turning to him, Sasha said she had brought some meat from the storehouse. Aye she really wanted to go into solitary huh ? I smacked my forehead with my palm. I winced as the scar from my jaw to my shoulder started throbbing and Eren looked at me, distressed. I waved him off, signaling it was nothing. As we all started cleaning the canons again, there was a flash of light and the Colossal Titan popped his head over the wall. Before we had time to react, we were blown off of the wall. I caught myself with my ODM gear and drew my blades. He killed my brother...and now, I was gonna kill him. We all looked over at the wall and froze, in horror, as we saw the same hole in the wall as 5 years ago. 

"YOU BASTARD !!" I cried out as my golden eyes started glowing brighter. 

Eren and I nodded at each other and, with our ODM gear, we climbed back on top of the wall. We stood there in front of him, blades drawn and our eyes full of determination. 

"It's been 5 years huh ? Hehe...Today is the day...YOU FUCKING PAY !" I yelled, exposing my fangs.
