Lenny got back to New York and withdrew himself from the Army; his memories of all his fellow friends dying in battle and his many memories of Adriana made him do so. He did not think of all the things he had seen in Europe, or thought of the fact that he was shot, the only thing in his head was the blonde hair and the breathtaking blue eyes. After a week back home Lenny got a job in a construction company.

"It is not about earning money, it was just to get by, stay occupied, and not to think about my broken heart that's yours darling," he wrote on his letter to Adriana.

Working long hours did not give time for much, just to read and study art. He was often tormented by pieces tha Adriana loved. He visited museums that were near to examine pieces that were inspired by the city and the war, there he met a lovely French girl, named Amy. They talked about art for the rest of the afternoon. They decided to grab a drink at her place and a couple glasses of wine the atmosphere was set; clothes began to land on the floor slowly. The only going through Lenny's mind was Adriana, his love letters to her, and how she had never replied. Though their love was not yet assured, a sense of guilt landed on his heart. He stood up not saying a word and left the apartment confused.

Lenny was simply overwhelmed by a feeling of love and hate. The love he felt for that Russian nurse during the war was not just a crush or a flirt, he couldn't easily forget he had hate in his soul because she never replied to his letters for a month... thirty letters and no replies. But her beauty, her physical and intellectual beauty, was like no other women he had met before. This fact stuck to him with no escape, like the bright sun on a summer morning. Longer hours at work was the his only escape of reality but the dreams at night were not controllable, but part of destiny. Adriana was the only thing in his dreams and when awake his thoughts.

Moscow, USSR. A month before.

Adriana just arrived in her hometown, still overwhelmed by the faces of many soldiers dying and breathing their last words, looking her in the eye, overwhelmed by all those poor children dying due to the war, but mostly because of her short period relationship with an American soldier who she had fallen deeply in love with. Arriving at Moscow to discover the place she lived in was destroyed. Adriana had lost everything materia,l but it was worthless in her eyes. She had no love and no one who would comprehend her like Lenny did. Parties and celebrations from close friends filled her evenings for the first week back home. Many were curious about the war and how she survived without getting bombed and many other thing of that nature. She didn't feel content with the people's interest of her feelings and thoughts, but felt an illness of depression due to the fact that everyone around  her had a misunderstanding of the war and was treating her as an amusement. Adriana to  began working with veterans in a hospital to get away from her misfit illness. Looking for a sense of appealing companionship Adriana went on dates with veterans and doctors from the hospital but no one could fill her intellectually and emotionally like her far away love once did.

Because she had no permanent place she stayed with an old friend, Natalia, who during the war  stayed in the motherland creating tragic art about the war, never understanding the true meaning of her art just coloring within the lines. Adriana clearly understood the art, she never held a rifle or shot a German soldier, but she saw men dying daily because of it. Natalia knew Adriana did not like speaking about the bad things of the war, but never about the American lover. One time, during dinner when Natalia got back from a bad date, Adriana slipped a word about Lenny and with that she  expressed herself for the first time about the love she had in Berlin. She knew that her close friend did not fully understand her, she knew nobody would, but telling Natalia what happened in Belin made Adriana feel comfortable around her.
