When Gen heard he was going to be assigned to protect the Kekkaishi at Karasumori Academy, he didn't know what to think. Of course, Gen took the assignment, but he couldn't imagine why the chief of the Night Troops would send him to work with the Legitimate Heir of the Sumimura Clan and the Legitimate Heir of the Yukimura Clan. He said that he believed Gen would bond with his younger brother, Yoshimori, and possibly with Tokine Yukimura.
Gen couldn't comprehend why he of all people would be sent to attend their school, though. He could deal with slaying ayakashi and defending the Kekkaishi from them, but when it came to being social, Gen was at a loss. He thought that he wasn't fit enough for the mission, and he wasn't the only one who held that sentiment. He heard the other Night Troops talk about him when they had gotten wind of his assignment. They talked in hushed voices, airing out their grievances against Gen being the one to be sent to Karasumori, but he heard every word. If Gen had the choice, he'd let someone else take the assignment like Sen or Shu, but he couldn't give away such a personal mission given to him by the Cheif. He wanted to prove himself to his Cheif, but deep down, Gen feared that he would only wind up getting someone hurt and having to be pulled from the mission. Chief assured him that it would be fine, but Gen believed he held too much faith in him.
Regardless, Gen still was escorted to Karasumori in the dead of night by Hiba. They checked out the school grounds and Hiba lectured Gen once again on his need to restrain himself. Afterwards, he settled into his apartment, sighing as he took off his uniform, changed into comfortable clothes, and promptly collapsed on his bed.
Dread pooled in his stomach as he remembered that his first day of school was tomorrow. In truth, Gen had little interest in learning. Practically ever since he could walk, Gen was either trained to fight or was forced to defend himself from his brothers ganging upon him. Then, Gen was inducted into the Night Troops and was trained by Atora and her beasts to gain mastery of his ayakashi abilities. He had no formal education, so this would be his first real experience in a school setting. Gen couldn't have cared less about his education, but if it held any weight in terms of his mission, he'd have to learn how to be a semi-competent student. He wished he could just camp out in his apartment until nightfall, but both Cheif and Atora insisted Gen to go to school and learn to become social with others and make friends. He thought it was a waste of time, but he knew he couldn't refuse both his trainer and his Cheif. Gen took in a deep breath and began to focus on his breathing, inhaling, holding his breath, and exhaling in four-second intervals. As he did, Gen slowly felt his consciousness drift away as he fell asleep alone in his dark apartment.
Sunlight crept through the gaps in between the blinds of Gen's window. A warm yellow ray of light shined down onto his face, making Gen cover his face with his arm with a groan. He slept restlessly, his stomach knotted up with worry about what would happen when he got to school.
Wait...school! Alarm coursed through Gen as he shot up from his bed. Did he not set his alarm? Must have forgotten to...shit! Gen thought as he raced around his apartment, trying to get ready. He quickly changed into his uniform and fumbled with his school bag. Normally, Gen wouldn't be so nervous, but this was out of his comfort zone, not to mention the pressure he was under.
Gen burst out the door and practically jumped down the set of stairs that lead up to his apartment. Luckily, he seemed to live in a quieter part of town with fewer people. Gen guessed Cheif picked this area on purpose so Gen didn't have to worry as much about people seeing him. He began to walk to school, wishing he could just leap from rooftop to rooftop as he did at night, but he knew that doing it in broad daylight outside of a dangerous situation would be worthy of punishment.
After a few minutes of walking, Gen had arrived at Karasumori Academy. He was relieved to see he wasn't late, or at least not the only one who was. He took his bag out and grabbed his schedule for his classes. Gen had been sent his things for school before coming to Karasumori, including his schedule.
