Prom night

I finally gathered courage and entered the school auditorium. Soft music was playing on the speaker and teens were ball dancing all around the hall. Yep, the typical high school prom night. I didn't look too fancy but definitely presentable than other days. My eyes squirmed around the hall past the cheesy couples and I finally found something worth watching. Sarah, this girl had been my best friend since like the first grade. Well, me being the awkward being i was had a huge crush on this girl for quite some time. We grew up together. She was wearing a white gown and her blond her was done in a bun. Strands of hair were hanging off her temples. She looked utterly beautiful. Anyway, Sarah finally saw me and we hugged each other.  I thought I'd ask her to dance with me when somebody called her name. Adam. Now we all know every high school has this very handsome boy with dirty blond hair who is in the school basket ball team. Well, apparently Adam was that guy or in other words "the guy" in our school. Heart throb of girls.  He approached us and to my surprise, I could see the color rise in her cheeks. "Hi" she blurted out. "Hey beautiful lady, fancy a dance with me?" And he took her away while I stood there feeling like a complete idiot. "I knew this wasn't a good idea"  I thought to myself and stormed out of the hall.  My mind was buzzing and I just walked blindly towards the playground.  I lay down on the grass. The playground was very quiet.  Laying down on the grass  I let out a deep sigh and thought, "What was I thinking?  Why would she ever like ME? I'm the weird girl in the class who looks like a boy and fancies girls. How would I be a match to Adam? To anyone?" The sky was very clear. A lot of thoughts were running through my mind when I heard her voice

"I knew you'd be here, I was looking for you ."

"  Uh yeah, I wasn't feeling well"

"That's ok, the sky looks so beautiful tonight."

"So....y'all danced?" I tried to sound as normal as possible, hiding any uneasiness in my tone.

"Huh? oh, no his friends called him, they had some work to do apparently." She sounded a little sad

"Oh" I said and looked at the sky.

Then I decided stop thinking about the situation, it's a prom night for God's sake I couldn't be all sad and crying there like a baby.

"Ask him out already dummy" I tried to sound cheerful

Her cheeks went red and she grinned which made her look even prettier

"You think? I like him a lot but I'm shy" she said looking down at the grass

I gripped her shoulders with my hands and turned her towards me

"You just gotta step on it, now go on it's your chance"

She kept quiet for quite a long time and looked at the sky. The silence was making me a little uneasy. Then suddenly, she hugged me and said, "Thank you Ray, you're the best friend one can get"

After saying these words she stood up and walked towards the school building bidding me goodbye

"Bye,  you go girl" I yelled

Well someone was happy. After all,  I did have to embrace the fact that she's obviously not into girls.
