Chapter 4
“We got our first gig!!” Alice screeched in my ear.
Immediately a hyperactive sense of excitement buzzed around our band, and the other’s boyfriends, who had decided to join us; I had yet to find my one true love, or even to get kissed.
My hair had been cut to a short spikey bob. I disliked it, mainly because I couldn’t hide my face. The fringe was the best bit; it allowed me to hide my eyes a bit.
I still didn’t talk much; in fact, I went days without saying anything to anyone. Everyone had thought I had gotten a lot better when in fact I was just the same as always.
I had stopped self-harming with my blades, but now I self-harmed through not eating. Not many people noticed, and if they did they would forget. I was slowly killing myself, and no one realised.
After the band stopped talking about the gig, we started rehearsing.
I had written most of the songs and I think I could safely admit that they were pretty good. I vented all my anger, frustration and pain into playing the bass and screaming along.
We played for hours, until we needed to get ready for the gig.
My outfit was simple; a chain bouncing on my leg, black ripped jeans and a tank top. The scars from my suicide attempt were still there, white lines contrasting against my black clothing.
I had to just go out there and ignore them.
“Hello you wonderful people! We are The Romance Killers!” Alice screamed into the microphone. The audience screamed back enthusiastically.
“1 2 3 4!”
We all started playing Demolition Lovers.
This song brought so many memories, and made me cry each time I heard it. Tears pricked at my eyes and threatened to spill, but I held them back.
All my misery poured into playing.
We had finished playing. Walking up to the owner of the place, he congratulated us on the amazing performance. We went out to the crowd and we were greeted by ecstatic fans.
I stayed back and walked over to the bar, ordering a beer as I sat down. A man, who looked about 20, sat next to me.
“Hey.” He said, in a deep voice.
“Hello.” I replied quietly.
“The music was good tonight. I love the lyrics. You’re a good writer.”
“Excuse me?” I asked, wondering how he knew I wrote the songs.
“There was a song with the lyrics ‘The scars you see, are some of many’. The singer and the rest of the band don’t have any visible scars. You, however, have giant white lines on your arms.” He said, smirking slightly.
I frowned. I was hoping no one would notice, but I guess they must have been extremely obvious.
“Fair enough.” I said, blankly. He shut up after that, for a while at least.
“You know,”
I turned to him, “I work for a recording company. You interested?” I nearly spat out my drink.
“No.” Alice said, bluntly.
“Why not?!” I asked.
“There could be a much better deal out there! We can’t just go with the first people who offer!” She said.
“This is the company that worked with My Chemical Romance. We could meet them!” I practically shouted.
Alice looked stunned.
“Fine. We’ll take a vote. Who wants to say yes?” Everyone but Alice put their hands up. She sighed and continued to tell the man ‘Yes’.
“Oh, did I mention, that the company is in California?”
