Escaping Candor

Chapter 1

" Mrs. Hayes, you don't seem very honest right now. Tell me the truth."

" I won't."

" Then we have no choice. Truth Serum."

They inject me with the liquid. I can feel the effects trying to take over me. I won't let them.

"Now once again, Mrs. Hayes, did you steal the cakes from Peter?" my teacher asks.

I feel the urge of truth about to escape- and then I stop. I breath. I think about what I'm going to say. And what comes out, is a lie.

My name is Rose Hayes. I have been truth tested since I was young. I lie worse than a Dauntless. I can ignore the serum. I live in Candor. I hate it here. My younger brother, Peter, bullys and pesters me daily. I am 16 now. I am leaving Candor. But to where? I guess I'll decide after my aptitude test. I need somewhere I belong.

Today is the aptitude testing. We sit at the long tables in the cafeteria at our school. All the Candor next to me are arguing about someone lying to someone else and not being " honest" about something. Finally my name is called.

I walk through the exit of the cafeteria, and into my assigned room, number 6.

Standing there is a small, less severe than usual looking dauntless woman, waiting for me. I notice she has a tattoo on her neck. It must mean something. I decide to stay silent.

" Sit down. Make yourself comfortable." I sit down and she attaches electrodes to her forehead and mine.

" What's your name?" she asks

" Rose. Rose Hayes." She slightly smiles.

" I'm Tori." She replies. Tori. I like that.

I finally get the courage to ask, " Does your tattoo mean something."

" It's a hawks eye, symbolizes the sun. I used to be afraid of the dark, but now the sun is always with me." She says. " Drink this." She hands me a clear liquid. I accept it, and chug it fast. My eyes close.
