"Are you sure?" I looked down at my ailing mother. The sound of her heart on the monitor above was the only noise in the background. As  we spend our 3rd month in this muggle hospital, the sound was all too familiar.

"I will not keep you from your last year at school Desiree, I'll be fine. Your brother will be here too" I looked up from her to see my brother sitting on a couch opposite the room. His hands were on his head as he looked at the ground.

"I don't want to leave you mum" my eyes started to water as I looked at her. Her once silky brown locks I inherited from her were gone, her skin was pale with imperfections all over it. I hated seeing her like this. But she still looked beautiful, she was still glowing.

"It's time to go.. you don't want to miss the train." Darren said getting up from the couch. I gave a small nod before holding my mom tight. Neither of us wanted to acknowledge that this might be the last time we would be doing this.

"Love you mum" I said trying to hold back tears.

"Love you too hun. Have a good term. I'll see you at Christmas." She smiled weakly as I slowly let go of her hand. Darren led the way to our car.

Darren and I grew up with more influence in the muggle world, seeing as my mother was one and my father died in the war before I was born. She tried to teach us all she could, but could only do so much. So when we got our letters to Hogwarts she was overjoyed for us.

Darren graduated 2 years ago and is now an auror.

"Work paying you enough to cover the medical expenses?" I asked him as we made our way to kings cross.

"Barely." He muttered. He was having just as much of a hard time with this as me, maybe even worse. He thinks I'm lucky to get away from it all and have a distraction at school but I'm not sure I see it like that. "Muggle bills are expensive. With all the surgeries she's been in to remove the tumors, being on an IV drip, chemo.. it's a lot Des."

I wished I could help in some way. Make some money to cover the overwhelming debt were in.

"I have to get to work, so I can only drop you here" he said pulling up to the drop off lane. "Try to have a good year? For mum?" I looked at his eyes. I'd never seen them like that before. He always used to be a jokester and laughing all the time. It hasn't been that way since she's been in critical condition.

"I'll try..." I gave him a hug before he pulled my things out of the car. I watched him get back into the car and drive off. I let out a long sigh and headed into the station. I was running late so I wasted no time getting to the platform and running onto the train, one minute to spare. I went to the Slytherin car and looked for my friends.

"Desiree!" I heard a loud yell that I could destinctly make out to be Pansy's. She sat across from Draco and Blaise.

"Hi" I said with a smile as she gave me a tight hug. With the crap about blood purity being such a big deal in this house, people were nice to me. Especially Pansy, I don't know why she's so nice to me but cruel to other half-bloods. Must just be that I'm a Slytherin.

The only Slytherin who couldn't seem to see past it was Draco Malfoy.

"Did you get uglier over the summer?" He sneered at me, showing off a smirk.

"Just as much as you got smarter" I said sarcastically pulling out of mine and Pansy's hug.

"Come sit" Pansy said ignoring the interaction. This is normally how it was with us. No one batted an eye anymore, Blaise and Pansy were mutual friends between the two of us and that's the only reason we hung out.
