Warm light seeped into the room from the sheer curtains and I smiled. I yawned and sat up straight, smiling at the smell of french toast and maple syrup. Who's cooking? Where am I? The door opened and Markus stood in the doorway, dressed casually, sipping coffee.
"Markus?" I asked. "Wait? I'm with Isaac and Ethan? You're sick? The Darkness is coming."
" What are you talking about?" He asked coming in and sitting on the bed. "I've told you countless times, we are on vacation."
"But...But..."
"Honey," He reached out and touched my hand. I snatched it back, confused.
"We're...I'm..." I noticed a glinting object and saw that I had a wedding ring on my finger. I was married. Oh my God I was married.
"You need to relax Ella,"
"When did we get married?"
"Six years ago."
"No..n-no...this isn't right. I'm dreaming. That's it. I'm dreaming."
"Not this again," He sighed getting up, putting down his mug and leaning against the dresser. "Ella, please don't do this."
"This isn't real Markus! None of this is really! I'm dreaming!"
He slammed his fists down making me jump. "Stop! Stop it right now!"
"You're just a figment of my imagination."
"You're not dreaming! You do this every time we go on vacation! You promised! You promised this time!"
" I've never promised you anything!"
"Mommy, daddy, why are you yelling?" A little girl asked standing in the doorway and behind her was a smaller girl.
"We're just talking loud," Markus explained walking over to them.
"Mommy?"
Markus crouched down and smiled at the girls, talking to them before kissing them both on the head and turned to face me.
"Yes. Our daughters Ella."
"Are you okay mommy?" The older one asked.
"Yeah, are you okay?" The second asked.
Markus crossed his arms and tilted his head. "Are you?"
"I...I..." I stuttered like an idiot. I'm not their mother. I'm not. I'm 16. I'm just 16.
"Let mommy and daddy talk, go and watch some cartoons." He said and the kids turned away. He closed the door and leaned against it. "You're scaring them again."
"Those aren't my kids." I shook my head. "I'm still a virgin."
"No...you're not." He came over, pulling out his wallet. "See?" He was showing me pictures. "That's us on our wedding day. That you when you were pregnant with Alexandria, and that's you with Penelope. That us on Pen's 1st birthday, and that's Ali's 5th birthday and she was afraid of the clowns."
That was us. I just can't remember taking these pictures. This is bad. Why can't I remember?
"Markus...I can't remember this."
He reached out and touched my face as I scrambled to look at pictures and remember. "Ella."
" It was bad, there was Erik and Ethan, and I couldn't find anyone. You were hurt. The Darkness was coming-"
"Not anymore. It's over. It's gone."
"Markus, this is a dream. I know it is." I cried. "It's too good to be true. I can't be happy with you. I don't have children. Nothing's right."
