Fearless Servants
Chapter four
"I told you to clean the greet room, not lady Violetts bathroom!" I walked into the servants hall, greeted by the awful sound of arguments.
"But-but-but." A girl stood beside a mop bucket, her face hidden by her small hands. She didn't look much older then fifteen.
"But but but!" mimicked an older boy walking past her. He had an evil smirk, but I could tell he was only being playfull.
"Erm, excuse me?" they all froze and turned to me.
"Who are you!?" an older lady who's dusting a long table snaps.
"So polite." the boy mutters, sitting on the top of the table. He crosses his arms and grins, "So, who are you, new girl?"
"I'm Valire. Pleasure." I stick out my hand, but no one shakes it. "Um, I'm one of the orphans from St.Andrews, and Sofia-"
"Lady Sofia to a human!" The older woman hisses. She has short white hair that goes to the bottom of her ears, her face is aged and wrinkly.
"Beg my pardon." I try to keep the sarcasm out of my voice. "She told me to come down here well they are out."
"Well, make your self comfortable! I'm Angelo." he gives me a warm smile. He has dark brown hair that's neatly styled. He's wearing a white button up shirt and black dress pants. His eyes are a deep violet, in certain ways, he reminds me of Marco. My heart sinks, I'll never see him again.
"Nice to meet you." I go and sit next to him.
"That Is Anne," he waves to the old lady, "Quite a stick in the mud, if you know what I mean?" he adds in a whisper.
"We all know what you mean, Angelo! Now get off my table!" she slaps his up side the head with the cloth.
"Ow!" he scowls at her, "Oh right! This is Adele." He shoves the girls shoulder. She takes her hands away long enough for me to see her face. Strawberry-blonde hair frames her small face. Her eyes are light blue, and freckles cover every inch of her face.
Anne and Adele both wear a cotton white dress that goes to there ankles. Adele wears a black apron that holds different cleaners. I guess they don't need a cook around here.
"Stop in, Angy!" Adele cries, running towards a side door.
"Aww! Come on Adele, we have a guest!" he laughs, running after her.
I let a small laugh escape my lips, the sound seems so foreign in a place like this.
"Don't laugh at the girl, she's had a hard time here." Anne scowls at me, before leaving the room.
I didn't mean to laugh meanly, but to late now I suppose. I walk through the door that Angelo and Adele went through.
Im guessing this is where the three sleep. Three small beds that have matching blue quilts are lining one wall. Two dressers line the opposite one. It's a simple room, but cozy none the less.
Adele sits on one bed, cuddling a stuffed bear. I've never had one of those. Angelo is sitting beside her, making jokes and telling her it's ok.
"Um, can I explore?" I ask, feeling awkward just watching.
"No no no! You must not be in the house alone!" Adele's eyes widen, frightened by the thought.
"Why? Everyone's gone!" I wonder, confused.
"We are not allowed to rome the house without doing a job, they will know, Lady Valerie, the will know." she shivers.
"Don't call me Lady, I'm in the same position as you." I mutter. She must only be fifteen, I'm sure of it.
"I have to go clean Sir Dominic's room. It will take before dawn." Angelo gets up, walking out of the room he leaves Adele and I alone together.
"Lady Valerie, can I ask you something?" Adele asks, moving her blonde hair from her shoulder.
"Only if you don't call me Lady Valerie." I tease as I go to sit on the bed beside her.
"Lad- Valerie, how did you not get... eaten? Why would they not have you? Are you poisoned?" she tilts her head in confusion.
"Well, apparently I was Sofia's 'dish', and she is on a hunger strike. So she did not want to eat me. They do not know I'm still here, so I would like for you not to tell, by the way."
She nods, "But, if Lady Violett or Queen Nella asks, I have to tell them the truth, you know? My life would is at their mercy!"
I laugh and lie back, Adele is nice. She's to innocent for her own good. I feel like she's too young to be here, at the most I think.
"Well, I have to go pick out lady Violetts dress for the ball tomorrow. Good bye, Valerie." Adele stands up and glides to the door.
"Ball?" I sit up with a start.
"Yes?" she lets out a girly laugh.
"Oh, we'll, I'm going back to Sofia's room, I guess."
"Ok, good bye." she leaves with a smile.
I walk back to Sofia's room. Ball? I wonder what Sofia will wear! That will be exciting.
When I get back to her room, I don't even notice the time. It's twelve in the morning and I don't see Sofia sitting on the window seat, starring at the farm house. I plunk down on the bed and roll under the covers.
"Valerie?" she jumps up.
"Ahh!" I scream, oh wait, it's just her, "Oh, sorry."
"Ha ha! It's ok!" she laughs and sits beside me. "So, I was wondering if you would want to go to a ball tomorrow with me?"
"Are you asking me out?" I tease, shocked by my sudden bravery.
"Good one," she rolls her pink eyes, "I want you to come. It will be the royal family's from Germany, England, Sweden, Switzerland, Ireland and all us! Just us vampires."
I shrug, "Ok, but won't they know I'm human?"
"It's a masquerade ball!" she shakes me in excitement.
I can't help but laugh, "Ok! What will I be wearing?"
"I'll show you in the morning. After all, you are still human, so get some rest." she gets up and goes back to the window.
I smile and close my eyes.
A ball!
Who would have thought it.
