As I ring this bell
outside the department store
my eyes grow weary and my feet get sore
Still I must fill my red kettle to try and help the poor
As I ring this bell
men in fine suits pass
"Just a dollar to help the needy?"
They stroll on like I hadn't asked
As I ring this bell
A woman in expensive dress goes by
she completely ignores my kettle
doesn't look me in the eye
As I ring this bell
out here in the cold
my kettle is far from full
and the night is growing old
As I ring this bell
folks pass with every kind of toy
yet I know there are children out there
who won't feel Christmas joy
As I ring this bell
I begin to lose hope but still I try
for as these people fill their carts
starving children sit and cry
As I ring this bell
I notice a tiny little girl
looking at me intently
as she brushes aside a curl
As I ring this bell
she whispers in her mothers ear
her mother hands her a dollar
and she brings it over here
As she drops the dollar in
other children stop and look
they start to ask their mothers
to reach into their pocket book
As I ring this bell
many children gather round
my kettle starts to fill
as my bell rings out its sound
As I ring this bell
I feel warm tears run down my face
For as I ring this bell
I've seen hope for the human race
