Cole and Hayden were two years apart in age but were attached at the hip. That soon changed when it became apparent just how much more talented at hockey Hayden was. Cole loved his brother. He really did but in his eyes Hayden took away the only thing he had from him. The one goal he had was to make it to the NHL and be the next Crosby. Hayden never even liked hockey. He just did it because he wanted to be like his older brother until he realized how good he was at it.
As time passed Cole started to resent his brother. He would avoid him at all costs not that it mattered anyway. Hayden was too busy being doted on by their parents and everyone in the town.
Their parents were military and were rarely around when they were younger. As word of Hayden's talent spread and his popularity grew his parents suddenly had an interest in their kids' life. Too bad it was only an interest in one kid's life and not the other.
Cole tried for years and years to get his parents to take an interest in his hockey to no avail but suddenly they had all the interest in the world for Hayden's hockey. It sucked. Cole felt isolated from his own family. He felt like a stranger in his own home. Little did he know soon he'd be exactly that.
Cole was snapped out of his daydream by his best friend Nolan asking him about Hayden's birthday plans. He really didn't know what Hayden wanted to do nor did he care at this point. He dreaded having to be around for his brother's birthday with all the attention on him as always. For his birthday he slept all day and bought himself a cupcake and tried to appreciate the wallet his parents gifted him despite asking for hockey gear.
"I don't know and I don't care but hey wanna hang out tomorrow? We can get some food and chill at the arcade or something." He answered.
"Ditching your brother on his birthday? That's cold bro but yeah I'm down." Nolan said.
The bell rang signaling the end of the school day and Hayden quickly left in order to get to practice after making plans to hang out with Nolan tomorrow.
Cole rushed into the locker room and hurried to change into his gear. His teammates greeted him with multiple yells of 'Cold Cole!' He grimaced.
Cold Cole. That awful nickname he thought.
Hockey nicknames are certainly special but this one was something else. Everyone thought that Cole was cold. In truth he was. He was closed off to everyone but Nolan. A side effect of his parents never showing any affection or emotion with their kids or at least this kid. He rarely spoke because why speak if nobody was going to listen. People often thought of him as the lesser Henderson. Barely mingled, kept to himself quite unlike the other teenagers in this small town in Alberta.
The only person he spoke to was the ice. He felt like the ice was apart of him. The only place he felt truly at home was on the ice. Nothing beat skating for him. His only goal was being drafted into the NHL. He wasn't like his brother though. As much as he hated to admit it his brother had natural talent. He needed to work twice as hard to be as good as him but he wouldn't rest until he was better.
"Okay kiddies lets get this show started!" Cole said as he raced out of the locker room.
"Cold Cole has spoken. Let's go!" His team mate Blake said.
Practice flew by in a blur of scrimmages and drills and soon enough Cole was driving home. Pulling into the driveway he sighed as he noticed his dad's pick up signaling his parents were home.
Cole walked into the house and immediately headed from upstairs only to be summoned into the kitchen by his mother.
Cole set his gear down by the stairs and headed into the kitchen greeting his mother and father. He noted their expressions and immediately went into defense mode.
"Sweetie.." Cole was suspicious. His mom never called him pet names.
"You know we've been struggling lately and Hayden really needs new gear so we've decided that we cannot pay for you to play hockey anymore."
Rage filled Cole. How dare they take away his only love he thought. How dare they take away his only goal. Everything he worked hard for. How the hell was he supposed to make it to the NHL now.
"What the fuck!" exclaimed Cole.
His dad sprang up, "Language young man!"
This had to be a nightmare. I cannot believe these people Cole thought.
Cole took deep breaths trying to calm down.
"Why should I quit just so he could play? That's not fair. He never even wanted to play hockey!" Cole yelled, "You never take me into consideration. It's always Hayden this, Hayden that!""How dare you speak to us like that!" Oh fuck off he thought.
Hearing the commotion from the front door Hayden came into the kitchen to find his brother fighting with their parents.
"What's going on?" He asked.
"You know what? Whatever. Anything for your precious Hayden." Cole said calmly and stalked off to his room with teary eyes.
Hayden motioned to his parents to explain what happened but they just shrugged it off. Hayden knew his brother had a bit of a temper and didn't really get along with his parents but he had never seen him so upset. He decided to go talk to his brother so he went up to his room and knocked on his door.
"Cole? It's me Hayden." He started.
Behind the door Cole sat with his knees to his chest with tears streaming down his face. He was so tired of everything being about Hayden. Everything he worked hard for Hayden was taking away. It wasn't fair.
"Cole talk to me. What's wrong?" Hayden asked.
Cole refused to answer. If he did he wouldn't be able to contain his rage. As much as he resented his brother in this moment he still didn't want to hurt him. He also didn't want anybody to hear him crying.
Eventually Hayden got tired of waiting for this brother to answer him and left but not before telling his brother some important words.
"Big bro, I don't know what made you upset but I just wanted you to know I love you and I'm always here to talk."
He heard Hayden's footsteps slowly fade away and he let out loud sobs.
Hayden had no idea his brother resented him. He had no idea that his parents were forcing him to quit hockey in order for Hayden to be able to have more opportunities.
He didn't understand why his brother would barely spend time with him anymore. Why he was so cold to everyone. He just wished he could have his brother back.
Little did he know he was the reason why his brother was the way he was.
Cole got up from the floor and slipped into his bed totally ignoring any homework he had. He was mentally and physically exhausted. He drifted off to sleep and dreamt of skating on ice.
