He felt the blade penetrate his chest, looking down he saw the end of the Wolfs sword protruding from his torso. He gave a soft, unseen smile "That's my boy." He spoke, voicing a pride that went unspoken for decades of his long life. As he fell to his knees and darkness overcame him he heard the Wolf.. no his son speak the last words he'd ever hear. "You taught me well." He would've laughed if he could. He'd crafted a damn fine Shinobi, a shame he had to sacrifice his son to do so. That was the Shinobi Owls last thought as darkness overcame him.
His eyes opened. He grunted and made an attempt to sit upright. It succeeded, much to his surprise. He looked around and saw leaves of red dotted with the white of the little snow that managed to penetrate the canopy. He looked behind him and saw a frozen lake. As he took in the surrounding area he found himself reflecting on the events prior to his death and the life he lead. Then for the first time since he could remember Usui broke down and cried. Not fake tears to fool an enemy, not reserved tears that he hid for his own sake. He cried the most tears he had ever cried in his life. As he calmed slightly yet still continued crying he heard a slight rustling in a bush to his right. At first he cared little, too focused on his reflection and grief over the sorry excuse of a parent he had been, however he soon heard small yet gentle footsteps approaching he turned expecting a hound or a bear but instead standing a few feet away was a small girl, with a face covered in dirt and hair as white as the slight snow around them even in the long messy condition it was in. He soon realized another feature, and blinked the tears out of his eyes to get a better look to make sure he wasn't hallucinating. When he focused more to see in the darkness that was ever present in the night. No it wasn't a trick of the eye, there sitting atop her head were two animal ears, a fox's he had determined, and as he gazed into her ice blue eyes he flashed back to the starving Wolf he had met on a battlefield all those years ago. He must've tensed in his flashback because the girl gained a startled look not unlike a frightened animal and turned into the woods and ran. He saw and realized she wouldn't survive a day in the oversized tattered shirt she wore so he picked himself up and realized another thing, all of his gear was still on him. His sword remained sheathed on his back, his shuriken holsters full and his packs of smoke and healing suppressant bombs were all there. He then realized he didn't have time to run an equipment check as the girl was still in the cold woods alone and as his senses alerted him to three pairs of footsteps, hurried and heavy. He didn't know if they were after the girl but he wouldn't take the chance. He took a deep breath to prepare himself to sprint in order to catch up. She couldn't have gone far, but he wouldn't want her to be found by someone other than him. With his course of action set he took off into the dark woods.

"Get back here you mangy thief!" The yelling was getting farther and farther the more she ran and she would soon need to stop and rest as she was hungry and exhausted. Internally she chastised herself for tripping over the only piece of cloth on her and loosing not only her meal for the night, but also the element of stealth as she cried out when she fell. As the screaming faded more and more she stopped against a tree to take a breather. She sat down and hugged her knees to her chest as she thought about how she was probably going to die out here. The woods was another stupid choice but in her defense it was her only one she had to get away from the shop owner who caught her. As she was wondering if being eaten by a wolf would be painful she heard the last thing she expected to hear that night. It was the sound of a crying man, it sounded close as well, close or loud. Curiosity got the best of her as she started making her way towards the crying. Stepping through the brush she came into a large clearing with a frozen lake and tiny rays of moonlight poking through the snow covered treetops. The strangest feature however was the very large figure siting in the middle of the clearing. It looked like a giant ball of cloth and feathers, it had a big sword strapped to it and was trembling along with the shape which she concluded was the crying man. Her mind screamed that this had to be a trap set by the shop owners to get her but something within her seemed drawn to the man. As she debated internally the man had heard her and turned to face her, if she wasn't so haggard she would've let out a chuckle because the man had a large beard and big fuzzy eyebrows that reminded her of Santa Clause. Looking at his hair she then realized just how long it was, as she saw the end of the braid laying on the ground next to him. As his eyes met hers she felt as if he was boring into her very soul, but at the same time she could feel the overwhelming sadness in his gaze as he blinked his eyes to clear his tears. As she was about to say something to break the silence she heard the faint sound of heavy footsteps and realized they would catch her if she didn't run. So despite something in her telling her to stay she turned and ran back into the woods.
