Stephanie and Gabe stood at the tree without talking for a minute after she said that. She was processing and Gabe knew she was. It was starting to get dark and Gabe began to speak.
"We should head back."
"Boiler." Stephanie whispered
"What?" Gabe leaned in closer to hear.
"The de... Hayley... she said Boiler." Stephanie began to freak out thinking about her life back home and how it was the hot spot for demons. "The gates of hell are in my home town." She stopped and Gabe could sense her panic and quickly put her in his arms.
"It's okay. Your home now. They can't get you here we'll protect you." But she wasn't thinking about herself. She was thinking about her boyfriend and her coworkers at the hospital and her patients. Were they real? Or were they just demons trying to get to her and her mother to reopen the gates. Stephanie wanted answers. And she knew just the right person to ask.
"Come on. We're going home." They stood up and Stephanie was walking so fast that Gabe had to run to catch up. When they got home Stephanie left no time for processing. She immediately started asking questions.
"How long have you known?" Stephanie ambushed her mom in the kitchen while she was making pasta for dinner.
"Know what dear?"
"Don't play games with me!" Stephanie slapped the counter.
"I see someone's regained her memories." Stephanie's mom said with a calm voice while sprinkling salt in the pot. For a minute things were silent. Stephanie waited. Gabe grabbed a seat at the counter and gestured Stephanie to do the same. She sat. "My whole life..." she went on. "I've been trying to protect you from it and as you can see I've been doing a terrible job." She left the pot on the stove and opened a drawer next to the fridge. "You, me, your father, we are all witches born of blood." She pulled a book out of the drawer and handed it to Stephanie. "Demons are pests and the only way to stop them from taking over our world was the lock the door to theirs."
"I don't understand..." Stephanie said confused. "If I'm a witch how come I've never seen anything magical happen around me." Gabe laughed.
"Maybe because you've been hiding yourself from the truth for so long." He gave her a disappointed look and her mother took off her apron and began to speak.
"He's right you know. Witches can only use magic if they believe. If they WANT to believe. And you were so scared you didn't even want to remember." She opened the book to the very first page. "These are some of the spells I've come up with over the years." Stephanie looked down at the page.
"What language is this?"
"Latin." Gabe answered. "That translates to 'She shall not know what she cannot handle' I think I'm not fluent"
"Your absolutely right Gabriel!" Their mother gave Gabe's cheek a squeeze and smiled big.
"But what does that mean." Stephanie looked at her mother realizing that the spell was about her.
"From a young age I tried to get you to except that you were a witch. Every time I told you you freaked out panicked and wouldn't speak for days..." Stephanie began think about why she lost her memory. "I know what your thinking.... and yes, I took away your memory." She looked up at her mother. With tears filling her eyes but not allowing herself to cry. "But I did it for your own good. You regained your memories when you could handle what you are.... I never expected you would move to Boiler though. I've had to keep an extra close eye on you while you were there." Stephanie stood up and was about to yell at her mother who was calmly taking drinks out of the fridge. Then the water started to boil over on the pot and she turned off the stove. Then there was a loud crashing noise from the room where her father was sleeping. They all ran to his room.
