There she sat, sulking in her own sadness. She'd just gotten out of a bad relationship and she was engulfed in her emotions. She hated feeling this way, especially about him. He didn't deserve her tears, he wasn't anything special.

As much as she knew that, she couldn't help but be upset with how things ended. That wasn't all. She was just now reflecting on how badly she allowed him to treat her. And though she didn't like to admit it, he'd gotten to her. He had gotten in her head, found out her deepest insecurities and used them against her. She felt ashamed that she had allowed things to get to that point.

Ever since she was younger, she had always told herself that she'd never let a man disrespect her. Yet, here she was staring at the wall of her livingroom as hot tears fell. She stayed this way for who knows how long, until there was a knock at the door.

She lifted herself from the couch and trudged towards her front door. Looking through the peephole, she felt an instant sense of comfort. On the other side of the door stood her close friend, Ace.

They had known each other since elementary school. He had her back way back then. Another knock came, breaking her from her thoughts. She opened the door, ushering him inside.

He moved past the door and stopped, just looking at her. He'd known about the breakup, but decided to give her a little time before he intervened. Just standing there, the awkwardness grew. She began moving towards the couch and he followed.

They sat down and he continued just staring at her. Under his gaze, she could feel her resolve chipping away. Of course he noticed this.

"C'mere," he spoke, arms outstretched.

She moved closer until she was wrapped in his warm embrace. For a few minutes, she just cried as he stroked her hair. When she spoke, it was all words of deprecation.

"How could I let him treat me like that? I swore I would never be that girl. I gave him my all and he took me for granted."

"Ugh! I'm so stupid!"

He hated when she spoke of herself like that. To him, she was smart, beautiful, altruistic, and so many other positive things.

"Hey, don't do that to yourself. Love can be complicated. Sometimes what we see isn't the whole picture and that temporarily blinds us. That doesn't make you stupid, it just makes you human."

She really started to take in what he was saying. He'd always had a way with words. It was one of his best qualities, in her opinion.

For a moment she just looked at him, truly admiring the man in front of her. He had always known how to make her feel better. As she gazed at him, she had this internal conflict as to whether she should just lay everything out on the table. She had always liked him, but never viewed herself as worthy of being with him. One of her many insecurities.

It must've been her current emotional state that made her throw caution to the wind. She wound up spilling all her feelings. After, he was quiet just staring at her.

She'd immediately begun to regret her decision until he spoke. To her surprise, he'd felt the same way about her, maybe even more profoundly.

"I'm sorry it took me so long to admit that to myself and to you," she said.

"So, where do we go from here," she questioned.

"Well, it's great we know how one another are feeling, but there's no need to rush. Listen, love. I want you to work on yourself. Learn how to better love yourself and take care of you first. I ain't goin' no where."

By the time he finished, she was bawling all over again. Only this time, it was for the opposite reason.

The feeling he gave her made her want to be a better version of herself. From that moment forward, she began working on her healing. She deserved to be absolutely enamored with herself.
