I stir in the soft bed, wrapped in a puffy duvet. The sun's rays shine through the window of the cottage, heating me up. The birds and cicadas chirp outside, somewhere within the trees.

I push myself up with my elbows, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. I take a look at my new room, seeing my bag resting in my closet and my clothing from last night strewn around. I throw the bed covers off of my body, and fix my night gown.

The smell of pancakes reaches my nose as I get up.

"Y/n! Come eat breakfast, sleepyhead!"
Ms Clove calls out to me from the kitchen on the other end of the hall.

"Coming!"
I call out to Ms Clove.

I stretch my arms and legs, getting myself ready to start my day. I tidy the clothes from yesterday, and change into a fresh outfit. I throw my night clothes into the hamper, and put on a pinafore dress over a puffy sleeve shirt. I tie a bow at the front of it, and fluff out my skirt. I go to the mirror and fix my hair, as well as apply a quick mascara and blush. I spray some rose water onto my neck and wrists.

Once I finish, I push open the door and walk towards the kitchen. Ms Clove is happily sipping her cup of tea as she sits on the chair at the dining table, reading some leather-bound book. Her face brightens as she sees me approaching.

"There you are! Come sit, dear. I made pancakes!"

She slides the plate and teapot towards me, allowing me to help myself to the food.

The kitchen is made out of a dark walnut oak, with herbs and dried flowers hanging from the walls and sitting in jars. The bowl used for mixing the pancake batter sat next to the sink, waiting to be cleaned.

Last night was very eventful to say the least. Once I stepped inside the cottage, Ms Clove greeted me with a bouquet of summer flowers, assuring me that I shouldn't be shy. I quickly got settled into my room and we wrote a letter to my mom, explaining to her that I got there safely.

"Thank you Ms Clove! I could definitely get used to this."
I giggle and pull out the chair.

"I'm glad! I want you to feel at home here. Oh, call me Julie by the way! I don't want us to be so formal to each other."
She smiles, tilting her head and resting it on her hand. Her brown hair tied into a loose braid rests behind her.

"I'm okay with that! So what's the plan for today?"
I nod and take a seat, pouring myself some tea.

"Well, usually I begin by making sure that the shop downstairs looks nice. Then, I start setting my prepared mixtures into the display case..."
Ms Clove says, pondering her routine.

"Oh that reminds me! I need you to go pick up some supplies from the town. You could always forage them... but it's a little risky for someone new to this."
Julie says the last part to herself.

"I could do that no problem! I want to make myself useful."
I say as I eat my pancakes.

"Great! This can be a good experience for you! You can become acquainted with the people of Moomin Valley. They're all sweet folks."
She says as she takes her plate to the sink.

"Yeah... they all seem nice." I say quietly, thinking of the man I met yesterday.

After I finish eating my breakfast, I head into my room and retrieve my map. Julie marks the shop I need to get to on the map with a pink marker.
I leave my heavy bag in my room and instead, grab a  woven basket from the closet. I tuck a checklist of the herbs into my skirt's pocket.
Julie hands me a coin purse, and I place it into my pocket as well.

I skip carefully down the stairs, and head towards the shop entrance/exit, passing by the beautiful decorations and paintings that cover the walls.

I slip on my Mary Janes, and fix my hair.
