I knew what was coming before the words left her mouth. "Your father passed away in the night, I am sorry and people will be in contact shortly about the future of you and your sister. I'm sorry for your loss." I was still stunned. It felt like a million slaps round the face. "You're not sorry, are you? You could have saved him!" I screamed at her, collecting my belongings I'd gathered over the past week and a half, and stormed out. Once I'd ran out the revolving doors, collecting a series of strange looks from passers by, I stood completely still. The world span around me, and I took a seat against the hospital wall. A fresh breeze I hadn't felt in a while came over me, sending shivers down my spine. I rested my head on my knees and just wept. I couldn't stop. "Hey." Lil held out her hand, as I took it and pulled myself up. "Come on, you need to get home." Her mum was waiting in the car, engine roaring at the side of the road. I tried to say thankyou but all that came was more and more tears. Neither of them could even try to relate, first loosing my mum, forgetting the first whole 18 years of my life and now this. It almost seemed like it was out of one of those stupid soaps you get where there's always a dramatic ending to the episode. My life seemed to me never ending drama.

I managed a sputtered thankyou to Lil's mum and shakily turned the key in the lock. Scarlett ran at me, her eyes red and blotchy. She's obviously been crying as well, not that she was old enough to really understand. I picked her up as we walking up to our number, turning another key to open it. For the last few days Scarlett had been staying with Alice from across the hall, so the last time we'd been here was with Dad. I set Scarlett on the sofa and made my way to my room. Expecting and messy but comforting room with my laptop on the bed waiting, two men were packing boxes. "What do you think you're doing?" I tried to say, so shocked and upset to even try. "Our jobs, lovely." The chubbier one replied. I ran to the boxes and began to unpack everything, the photo of Dad and I, my jewellery box. "Sorry but you're sister will be going to a care home, and it's up to you where you go since you're 18." I stared. No way was I leaving Scarlett, not now. I felt a small, sweaty hand grab my own, I wasn't loosing her, we were the only thing we had left. I knew I had no choice, so I led my sister to her room and talked her through it while packing her things, trying to put a positive spin on the fact that she would be living with either out of control kids or a random, sad young couple. She was too young to understand, so I told her it was a holiday, that only the special little girls got to do it. Luckily, she believed it and began skipping around happily. I wish I could say the same for myself.

The following day, Scarlett and I got picked up by a taxi and driven to the care home. 'Beechwood Home'. It even sounded awful. Carrying the two suitcases and three boxes, we left behind our lives. A rather large, cosy woman answered and beckoned us in, introducing herself. I wasn't really listening, more looking around thinking that I might be living here. Scarlett settled in immediately, greeted by a girl slightly younger than herself, and led off to play barbies. I following the woman into a desk type room, where she pointed to a chair opposite her own. At first she began by saying how lovely it was to have Scarlett staying here. I grimaced. I only picked up one sentence in particular. "We actually have a couple looking for a little girl, and they want to meet her!" I did my best to look happy, I really did. Obviously a precious angel like Scarlett would get fostered easily. "You've been left all your fathers money to buy a flat or apartment with, if that's what you intend to do." I nodded weakly. What was my other options? Stay here, when Scarlett was off playing happy families? Live with Lil? The first month or so would be a dream, but I could tell it just wouldn't work. "That's settled then! As your support following your loss, I will look into flats for you. It seems your dad had quite a stash of savings, a big stash at that, so take your pick!" I couldn't help but smile, she was being so helpful. As I considered everything, I decided I couldn't stay here. It was too much, to many memories. Besides, Lil was going off to a college and Scarlett's possible foster family lived just on the outskirts of Surrey. London was my best bet, there were jobs, universities, everything to start fresh. "Okay then, you're welcome to stay as long as you want here until we find different means of living." I smiled and rose, making my way out of the room.

Yawning, I sat up in my small bedroom in Beechwood House. I'd been staying there for a few days, and tomorrow I'd be visiting fourteen flats in London. I didn't really know where my life was going or how I was going to afford living there. Apparently the money my father left was a huge amount, enough to keep my going for years, but after that? Who knows. I heard screaming and laughing down the hall, to be honest with you most of the kids here were irritating little peasants, but one little boy called Riley had sort of latched onto me. I drew the curtains and quickly changed, before the door creaked open. "Morning Summer!" Riley grinned brightly, his right hand gripping tightly to an old ragged teddy. "Hey Riley." I picked him up and tickled his chin as we both headed down to breakfast. All the children had smiles on their faces, they always did. It was surprising, considering they all either had no parents or ones that didn't want them. I sat Riley next to me and watched as thye tucked into breakfast. "Eat something Summer, there is enough for everyone!" Collette, the woman who had first shown me in smiled warmly, everyone was so lovely. I refused, insisting I wasn't hungry and headed out to get some fresh air.

The whole day passed quickly, taking Riley and Scarlett out to the park for a couple of hours and returning to find a casserole waiting. Soon after I headed to bed, shoving my headphones in and calling Lil. When morning came I was awoken gently by Collete with a tray carrying a bacon sandwhich. Smiling to say thankyou she headed out, reminding me I had twenty minutes before a taxi would be here to take me to London. By the time the loud horn beeped outside my window, I had changed, done my hair and makeup, and packed my bag. Riley came to wave me off along with Summer and Collete, as all the children gathered at the windows. They clearly seldom got visitors. Sliding into the back seat I gave a small wave to my sister and turned off around the corner. The journey didn't take long, there was fortunately little traffic and as the driver pulled up along Embankment I handed him money and stepped out. Since I wasn't meeting the estate agent for an hour I decided to have a walk around, heading away from the Thames. At the end of the road I noticed a large crowd gathered outside the door of a hotel. Peering over their heads I noticed a few lads taking pictures. One spotted me and waved. I somehow recognised him, but I couldn't quite remember where. "Summer!" He called. Who was he?
