Fearless Ball

Chapter five

"Now, when entering a ball, one must keep your head high and shoulders square." Sofia nudged my shoulders back and tilted my chin up. "Every vampire that's coming has already been to many dances. So you must act like you have too!"

For the past forty minutes, she's been teaching me how to act at a royal ball. I don't go to the dance floor unless asked, never slouch and never, ever, take my mask off.

"Do I have to break into song for you to understand!?" Over these last two days, I've grown to trust this vampire. She never looks like she wants to eat me, and she seems to love having this big secret that I'm here. "Ok, so, do you want to see your dress?"

I nod excitedly as she walks to then closet. She pulls out a long, pale green dress. The bottom is bordered with dark green lace, same as the top. The sleeves are the same material as a vale, she hands me dark green gloves that I would slip underneath the sleeves.

Once Adele finishes putting my corset on, she slides the dress over my head, it looks stunning. Sofia helped me put green vines in my blonde braid. She's wearing a blood red gown with the same lace and sleeves as mine.

"Now for the mask!" Adele Try's to hide her excitement as she hands Sofia a feathery green mask.

It covers my eyes, but leaves holes for me to see. The surface is covered by dark green feathers, getting lighter as they get closer to border. A few gold feathers are sticking out of the mask, making it look royal.

"It's, beautiful!" I stare at my reflection.

"It truly is!" Sofia giggles.

Adele stays quite.

"Well, the ball should be starting any moment. You stay beside the door until I go in, so people don't know your with me." she glides out of the room, Adele closing the door after her.

We sit in an awkward silence for five minutes, then I go down. She leads me through hallway after hallway. "Are you ready, Lady Valerie?" she puts her hand on the doorknob.

"I told you to not call me-" she jerks her head to some men entering the ball, "Yes, thank you."

She does a quite giggle, opening the door. Inside is everything you can imagine. The walls are a faint orange, the floor a delicate marble. On a lift, at the far side is an orchestra playing the violin, piano and harp. Vampires dance in beautiful ball gowns in the center.

"Go in!" Adele gives me a soft push. I stumble, but regain my balance, everyone hear has been to many balls. They expect me to act the same. Lifting my chin high, pushing back my shoulders, I walk with confident strides to the far side.

As I walk by, I notice Sofia is dancing with a man. He's tall and has light red hair, he's wearing a dark red suit and matching shoes. She has never looked happier.

"Ehm." someone coughs next to. I turn from looking at Sofia to see a very recognizable man. He has black hair, red eyes and is wearing a black suit. "May I have this dance."

Someone just asked me to dance? Sofia didn't give me lessons!"I can't... I mean I can but I don't know... it's just..."

He laughs and guides me to the dance floor, "Don't worry, I'll lead."

Mattinata starts to play by the violinist and vampire couples start to dance. We slowly start to dance, and in normal circumstances this would be very romantic. But this is not normal.

"Is this your first ball? I haven't seen you before." he asks, spinning me around.

"No, but I'm not very noticeable." I shrug.

He laughs, "Where are you from?"

I look over his shoulder and see Sofia smiling at me. "Um, Sweden."

"It's nice there." he starts telling me a story about when he went to Sweden. He never took his eyes away from mine.

"Yes, it's beautiful, isn't it?" I say in a sing-sing voice, twirling about.

"So, what is your name?"

Now I know where he's from! He's asked it enough last time. "You should already know." I can't help but smirk.

"Excuse me?" he looks taken back, "We've never met before, I'm sure I'd remember."

"I'm offended!" I say as seriously as I can, I'll never see this guy again, why not make it fun!

"Oh, I'm sorry, but-"

"Oh, the songs done!" I cut him off. I slip from underneath his arm and hurry to the door. I can't help feeling cold without his arm on mine. Snap out of it, I think, you just like him because he's cute.

"Excuse me," I hear his voice behind me, "Wait a second!" he grabs my arm.

If I weren't wearing these shoes I would have been gone by now! "The dance is over, I would like to leave now." I ignore him and address Adele.

"Yes, M'Lady." she curtsies and opens the door.

"Adele close that door right now." he snaps at her. She quickly closes it. "Thank you."

I keep my back to him.

"Why won't you tel me who you are?" he steps in front of me.

"Because I have, and you have asked, many times. So many times when I saw you I thought, he better not ask my name. Now if you would excuse me, Sir, I would like to leave this ball. It is very drab from the ones we have back in Sweden." I curtsy and open the door myself. With my back to him, I can't help but smirk.

"How dare you talk to me like that." He snaps. But I feel sad that he's not coming after me.

"Valerie!" Adele whispers. She lets out a cute laugh once the door is closed, "That was so... for lack of a better word, cool!"

I give her a side hug, "It was amazing. But I want to go back though. Not for him, but I love to dance." I sigh. At the orphanage Marco was teaching me how to dance, Nadia would just laugh at us.

"Well then go back in, Valerie!" She opens the door again, "Just if he asks to dance with you, say no!"

I nod and go in. As soon as I lean against the wall where he found me, I see him in the far corner. He's talking to a girl. She has short blond hair, a little spiky and her mask is light pink. She laughs, playfully hitting his arm. I don't know why, but jealousy fills me.

When she leaves his head turns my way, he catches my eye smiles. Not a warm, friendly smile, a smile that makes me shiver.

"Hey!" I see Angelo running towards me, "Why are you here, and all dressed up?"

"I'm pretending to be one of them." I shrug. He nods and leans against the wall beside me.

"I wish I could participate in the ball." he mutters, playing with the hem of his white shirt.

"Why?" I tease.

He shrugs, but I catch him looking over at Adele. My lips twitch up in a smile at the thought of her dancing with him.

"Well, it's late and after all, I am human. So I'm going to bed!" I whisper to him, skipping out of the room. I haven't seen Sofia, but I will in the morning. I take one last look at the boy in the corner. He's glaring at Angelo, but sees me looking at him and blushes.
