Chase struggled to his feet and looked back up at the swarm forming above him, blinking rapidly as his bionics fought to reset. He sniffed the blood he could feel starting to drip out of his nose back up as he got himself back into a ready stance, charging his laser bo in one hand. The swarm buzzed as it considered its next move, leaving Chase struggling to maintain his focus in the lull. All of a sudden, the swarm attacked, Chase rapidly switching to his forcefield to protect himself right before it struck, shifting it around him as the swarm attacked from all sides. He kept it up until the swarm pulled back for a larger attack, dropping his forcefield in order to reform it around the swarm. He cried out as the swarm fought to break free, his focus wavering. That was all the swarm needed to break the forcefield, swirling around before flying into Chase. He screamed as he fell backwards, the swarm surrounding him. He tried to crawl away, but the swarm followed him, cutting into him and tearing at his skin. He could barely even cry out in pain as he tried to escape, trying to pull the swarm off of him but failing miserably as they slipped between his fingers. Before long he was unable to do anything, lying on the concrete and bleeding out.
The swarm formed back into Reese above him, looking down at him and laughing.
“You’re miserable,” she snapped. “You’re just as weak physically as you are mentally.” Chase shook his head a little, trying to sit up. She stomped on his back and pinned him down, leaning on that leg and making him whimper. “Don’t even start. You know I’m right, Chase. I mean, you didn’t even bring backup. You came out here, into a part of town you know is controlled by my family, to pick a fight all alone. You’re ignorant, and blinded by emotion.” She got off of Chase only to grab him and slammed him into a wall by his throat. “You are going to be an example for any of your superhero friends that try and resist us. You will be the first to die.” She held him still as she charged her other hand with blue lasers, Chase flinching back into the wall. Before she was able to launch, however, she was thrown backward into a wall with a scream. Chase slumped to the ground, sitting up slowly and looking around.
“Hello?” he asked hoarsely. Suddenly he was lifted to his feet by strong hands, making him flinch and get ready to fight.
“Easy,” Skylar said, looking around. “I’m just getting you out of here. She won’t be down for long.” She held onto Chase as she ran back to the tower using her super speed, setting him down on the couch as Bree shut and locked the door.
“Are you okay?” she asked, looking over at him.
“Could be worse,” Chase replied with a small shrug.
“Then what the HELL were you thinking?!” she snapped, walking over to him. “You could’ve died!”
“He was about to when I got there,” Skylar said with a shrug. “Reese was going to do to him what she did to Douglas.”
“I’m sorry,” Chase said, looking away from them and getting up stiffly. “Let me know when it’s my turn to do watch.” He walked past them and headed upstairs, the girls watching him leave.
