The next morning with Sophie on school vacation and Lucas's sister Abbie cramming for college finals, I offered to have Sophie come to the bakery with me and see how things are done with daily customers, baking custom ordered holiday cakes and even getting a little practice in with her new Christmas present.
"Ms. Wylde, the double fudge chocolate brownies are ready."
"Great, thanks, Celeste!" Sophie followed me in toe to the kitchen with an excited look on her face anticipating my every move.
"I think it's cool you have the same last name as me!" she stated happily.
"Me too! Although I think the name Wilde describes you and your dad much better." I flicked the tip of her nose and she giggled adorably.
I bring my attention to the brownies that I started to cut into equal pieces for purchase like I always do, but something just didn't sit right with me this time.
"Hmm, I've been making these brownies forever but now they just look so plain. What would you suggest, Soph?"
"Everything is always better with frosting!"
"You know what? You're right. Let's open up your piping kit." Her eyes lit up like a Christmas tree and she ran to grab it. I hoisted her up to sit on the counter and we got to work cutting, piping, decorating, giggling, and joking with each other the entire time.
"Decorating with frosting is way easier on cookies than cake," Soph exclaimed. "It's flat instead of trying to pipe straight lines on the sides. It's so hard to decorate a gingerbread house after it's built!"
"Hmm, Sophie, you bring up a very good point," I said, really thinking about her unconventional idea.
"What are you guys up to in here?" Naomi called as she walked in with Lucas following behind her.
"There's my girls," he said and I saw Naomi's face swoon as did mine.
"Soph here just thought of an unbelievable idea for the competition!" I said excitedly.
"Oh, yea?"
"We do the piping and decoration on the walls and the roof BEFORE we construct it. That way it would be easier to work quickly and with a steady hand on a flat surface, like decorating a cookie, not a house."
