Above is Brandon:)
My breathing is ragged. Somehow the gulps of air I swallowed weren't enough to satisfy my burning lungs. The crisp air smacked my face and my hair provided little warmth, for it was blowing behind me in damp brown curls. My legs were starting to weaken and my knees were buckling. The lack of energy I've been using for the last two years has affected my strength so much. But even with the pain and the constant thunder of blood clouding my hearing. I pushed on. I would never look back to that hell hole.
Suddenly I wasn't the only person on the long dark road. Headlights peered through the trees and turned the corner. Now facing me. I could feel my eyes light up with hope. I wave my arms and yell for help. The car didn't see me at first but in the last second the car skidded to a stop. My knees gave out and I fell onto the hard concrete. My eyes started to drift and a small smile appeared on my face. Finally, I'm free.
"Chloe?"
My stomach drops and my heart stops. My eyes widen and look at the man standing in front of me. My breath once again leaves me. There before me, was someone I haven't seen in over two years. My big brother."Brandon?" I choked.
My brother and I were very close. Even looking at him now, I am reminded of every mischievous look, every inside joke, every fight, laugh, cry; everything. He steps forward and I am caught in place by how much he has changed. His face has lost more fat and has become sharper. He has gained more muscle and has gotten so tall.
But the only thing that has truly stayed the same, were his eyes. We shared the same eye color, but we somehow managed to make them look different. His held pride and responsibility. While mine glowed with purity and innocence. I doubt mine still look like that. And I'm guessing he noticed that too. Because he closed his car door, leaving the headlights on so we aren't covered in darkness. He kneels next to me. As speechless as I am.
"You're alive." He brings his hand towards my face, almost to make sure I was real. But when his cool smooth fingers barely touched my cheek. I gasp and scoot away instantly. Ignoring the pain in my bloodied feet. "Chloe?" I saw the hurt in his eyes and instantly regretted my rejection. But instead of scooting back over to him, I stay where I am to avoid further confrontation. My eyes cast downwards remembering the rules.
"Chloe? Do you know who I am?" I nod shortly in response. Not wanting to use my hoarse and unused voice. Brandon lets out a relieved sigh. "Good, you had me worried there. Here, let me help you to the car. You need to go to the hospital." He obviously realized where we were and my ripped and soiled clothes, my bloodied feet and bruises that invaded my arms and legs; slightly concealing the scars. My face probably had dirt on it, and I smelled like urine and sweat.
No no hospitals, he'll find me. I will be taken back. No, no, no.
My breathing becomes erratic as I look up to see Brandon slowly making his way towards me. I quickly get up, not letting the sudden dizziness affect my stance. I take a couple steps back and walk around him as if there were an electric fence separating us. I watch his face as he tries to conceal the hurt and confusion. But Brandon quickly recovers and lets me make my way to his car cautiously.
This is a test.
Once I'm in the car, Brandon lets himself in, careful not to get too close. I watch as he tries to avoid eye contact, and I see the tenseness and the way he looks as if he's about to fall apart. Neither of us know what to do, what to say. He starts the car and starts to make a U-turn so we are back towards our small town.
During the excruciating silence, I realize how much energy has actually left me. But before I let myself slip into the much needed sleep, I let out words that I was trying to hold back. Not trusting myself to keep everything inside.
Surprisingly, the only thing that came out was a simple, "Thank you" And I let my head mold on to the cool window and let the warm heated car, drag me under.
