"i'll play them all of my favorite songs"

dinner was such a fun time. the boys all got along really well and the food was delicious. but you knew it was too good to be true.

and just as the thought passed through your mind, nekomata asked in front of the whole table what songs you had been writing.

"you sing?" all the boys asked incredulously, jaws dropped. the only one who wasn't surprised was kuroo, and this whole situation was quite amusing to him.

"yeah, i do sing. and no nekomata, no new songs. i'm working on one but it's nowhere near done," you laughed, clearly embarrassed.

"you should sing for us sometime, y/n!" hinata suggested, mouth full of food.

you hummed in consideration. it was definitely a thought.

"we could go to do karaoke!" nishinoya added.

kuroo laughed heartily at the karasuno's boys enthusiasm.

"songbird here doesn't really sing for people."

you rolled your eyes. "not true! i just don't sing that often, is all."

the conversation stopped there, but it planted a seed in sugawara's mind that he couldn't shake off during dinner.

you sang; was it possible that you knew his singing angel? that you had met her before, sung with her, were friends with her?

he couldn't shake the possibility, and he knew he needed to talk to you about it.

~

you found yourself sitting next to sugawara on the bus on the way back, at his request.

when he asked your stomach did a flip, but you tried to ignore the feeling. he was just a close friend, that was all.

besides, your heart lied with another. sure, you'd never seen the guy before, but he was the only one who truly knew you.

the first couple of minutes were silent, awkward even. you stared out the window at the moon, still as bright as it had been a few nights ago when you played for the boy across the wall. who was he . . .

"y/n, you sing right?" sugawara interrupted your thoughts.

you nodded. "i do, for fun mostly."

"i see. do you like, know a lot of other singers? work with any maybe?"

you met his gaze, sort of off-put by the way he was looking at you. his eyes shimmered with some sort of excitement, or anticipation. and even though he was looking at you, you could tell his thoughts were anywhere but on you. it was a bit saddening, you realized.

"uhm, not particularly. i know some girls from choir, but as i said before, i sing mostly for fun. i've never collaborated with anyone else. why do you ask?"

sugawara's eyes lost their shimmer, but he still held your gaze. "just a question, is all. there's a girl i know, well not really now, more like heard of? who has a really wonderful voice. and i was wondering if you knew her."

you laughed slightly, trying to ease off the sudden rise of bitterness in the pit of your stomach. "unless it's me," you joked, "i have no clue who it could be."

"that's alright, y/n. don't worry about it." his eyes fell to his hands and he let out a quiet sigh.

i thought she could've been the answer, sugawara thought. how will i ever find my angel now?

you felt sort of bad for him, he seemed to really want to know who this singer was. it was a shame you couldn't help him. a shame he hadn't been thinking of you instead.

to take your mind off of these thoughts, you put in your headphones, putting on your favorite song.

"here," you said, handing a headphone to sugawara.

"o- oh. thanks, y/n." he took the headphone, listening quietly to the music. "i've heard this song recently, how do you know it?"

"it's been one of my favorites recently," you replied. "i can't get the tune out of my head. it's super easy to play on the guitar too!"

sugawara nodded, "it sounds better acoustic, i agree." his mind wandered to his angel, whom he had heard singing this song only a few days ago. with the guitar.

could it be . . . no. no no no. of course not. that would be . . .

he turned to look at you, noticing how your eyes caught the moonlight as you gazed out the window. the way the soft curves of your lashes and nose were outlined by the light as well. the slow rise and fall of your chest as your breathing slowed to match to rhythm of the music.

. . . ridiculous
