Andrea Portier had graduated high school and had yet to figure out what she wanted out of life. It seemed to her that just a month ago she had nervously made her way through her first day of freshman year and then, at the blink of an eye, she was standing at the podium on the stage at her graduation ceremony, feeling overwhelmed as she delivered her speech as Valedictorian of her class. She had taken every last one of the required classes, endured the ceaseless work distributed by her AP professors, enrolled in college classes, was the star player and team captain of her high school soccer team, and became trilingual in English, French, and Spanish. But her hard work and academic success hadn’t amounted to much, except her probable acceptance into her choice of colleges. And she was ecstatic, over the moon that she had met her goals, though all her achievements and skills would be considerably less significant if she couldn’t carve out a career she could revel in with them. She hadn’t had an inkling of an idea about path she’d take, but she knew she would take her time to decide, and carefully too, for what she decided would be her primary focus, whether she was keen on it or not.
And she would make her decision in a different environment then she had been in for all of high school. She needed a change of scenery, and that change came during a journey into her soul, unlocking her innermost potential and desires, and testing her strength under pressure and through obstacles. Andrea had begun her journey when she moved in with her grandmother in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was enticed by the city’s rich history and it’s slower pace compared to her life in Manhattan. Her expectations of her stay in New Orleans were that she would develop the skills to taking care of herself alone and expand her horizons for likely career paths. But they didn’t even begin to cover that; they stretched beyond, into the great unknown. And soon, the great unknown had a name: Wesley Devereux.
