Chapter 21 (Bailey)

The sun was setting as I was walking to find Ben. He had told me he was meeting me after his shift to give me something. The snow was falling like crazy, but it gave me a feeling of nostalgia and comfort. I smiled as I walked to the E.R. This day was perfect so far. I had my regularly scheduled surgeries and then I got to scrub in on a liver transplant with Richard.

I found Ben standing outside the E.R. with Carina. When Ben spotted me, he waved to Carina and she headed back into the hospital. Ben smiled as I walked up to him.

"What did you want? It seemed important in the phone..." I smiled.

"Well, I wanted to give you something." he replied, brushing his hand across my face.

"And what might that be?" I smirked.

"Here." he handed me a box that was wrapped in cute snow man wrapping paper.

"Do you want me to open it?" I asked.

"Sure you can open it here." he replied.

I unwrapped the paper and opened the box. Inside was a really cheesy but cute Christmas scrub cap with tiny little snowmen on it.

"I know it is so cheesy..." he began, "but when I saw it online I knew I had to get it for you."

"This gift is so thoughtful Ben, but you know I can't wear it..." I laughed.

"Yeah I figured you would say that.... honestly... I just needed an excuse to see you since your busy all day everyday." he laughed back.

He took the scrub cap and told me he would keep it with him to remind him of me. I know everyone probably thought it was wrong of me to decline his gift, but seriously, snowmen? I'm sorry but I could not bring myself to wearing it. I gave him a kiss and told him I would be home around 9:00 pm. He waved goodbye and climbed into an ambulance and I assume they headed back to Station 19.

I headed back into the hospital when Teddy came running towards me.

"Hey are you working tonight?" she asked, panting and trying to catch her breath.

"No, I'm heading home around 9:00. I don't want to be here too late because the snow is coming down hard and I want to be hike with my boys." I replied.

"Listen, I hate to ask...but...can you stay here tonight? Three doctors have already called off because they are either sick or in locations where the roads aren't good." she said.

"Umm...well...okay fine. I'll stay." I agreed.

"Thank you so much Bailey." Teddy squealed, writing something, which I assumed was my name, in her little notebook.

I walked through the halls to my office. I sat down in my chair and grabbed my phone. The time read 6:30 pm. The rest of the day was clear for me. I sat back and pulled up Ben's contact. I hit it and dialed his number. It rang about ten times before saying:

"Hey you have reached Ben Warren. I am either out fighting fires or sleeping because I was fighting fires so leave a message at the beep."

I left him a message letting him know not to wait for me since I was staying. I hung up and also texted Tuck letting him know as well. I scrolled through my news app on my phone, looking to see if any interesting stories were happening. After about five minutes of scrolling and finding nothing good, I got up and went over to my couch. I set my pager on my little coffee table and grabbed a blanket from my closet. I curled up in my blanket, shut the blinds to my office, and decided to take a nap. I had a feeling this night was going to be long and hard, so I knew I had to rest up.
