La cittadina in cui suo zio Henry vive è piccola e fredda, il clima sembra terribile e gli abitanti inospitali. Primo fra tutti, Hurst Paytah, destinato ad essere il capo di una tribù antichissima di indiani d'America, il quale non sopporta gli stranieri "che portano solo guai", pronti ad odiare i suoi amati boschi e le tradizioni che difende a denti stretti.
