An hourglass was once used to show the passage of time, a tiny vile consisting of two glass bulbs connected vertically by a narrow neck which allowed for the trickle of sand from the upper bulb to the lower. An object of delicate beauty it demonstrated to the world what many feared most in life. Time running out. While what it represented was feared, none could ever look away as the sprinkle of sand moved silently into the lower bulb, filling as the top emptied. There was something majestically tranquil about how easily the sand slipped through the opening. And while an hourglass is most alluring to us, it still stands by its purpose.
