Inspired by The New York Times article "Justice at Last for the Youngest Inmates?" by THE EDITORIAL BOARD and the 2012 Miller v. Alabama Supreme Court Case, Mercy is a short screenplay dealing with the ethics of the criminal justice system in the United States prior to life without parole sentences for minors being ruled unconstitutional. During the closing arguments of a trial, the circumstances of Sergeant Paul Miller's death are recounted as his fourteen year old daughter, Mercy Ann, faces the possibility of being sentenced to life without parole. Given the laws of time, will the circumstances leading up to her father's death save Mercy or condemn her?
