Five years have passed since Aang ended the Hundred Year War. It has been five years since Aang and Katara kissed during the sunset in Ba Sing Se. It was assumed that the kiss set a foundation for a future relationship between the young pair. After the war, the world is still badly torn and needs the Avatar's help in reconstruction.
