Avery wrapped an arm around my waist to catch me before I could get out the door. He pushed me up against the door, trapping me between his body and the door. "What's wrong?" I asked innocently. His face hovered over mine, much closer than I was used to. His gaze didn't leave mine as he spoke. "It would have been different if I had told him from the start. You wanted me to lie for you. You started this. If we tell him what really happened, he would be pissed at me for lying to him." "Stormie, you got a phone call!" Mason yelled up the stairs. The closeness between Avery and me started to make my legs feel like Jell-O, and I couldn't make sense of it. Our breathing became heavier. His eyes trapped mine. "Answer him," Avery murmured. "Uh," I stammered. I cleared my throat. "Be down in a minute!" My voice came out higher than usual. My gaze still couldn't escape Avery's. My heart raced wildly as his chest rose and fell against mine. Avery's gaze flickered to my lips. What's happening? My gaze fell to his mouth, which was moving closer to mine. Stormie West is brave, kind, and young. She has a lot to learn about love, trust, lust, and heartbreak. Stormie's older brother, Mason, is brave, cocky, and a bit of an asshole. He's the wide receiver for the high school football team. Avery Prince is Mason's best friend. Avery has it all, popularity, star quarterback, and girls. A shy high school senior jock and a closed-off girl battling an immune disorder fake a relationship to win a social media contest. Being shy isn't easy, especially when you're the new kid at school. Scotts Valley's football program is subpar compared to my last school's team, but the starters underestimate my all-conference skills. Girls eye me like fresh meat. Mom's cooking has the fire department on speed dial, and her game cheering makes me want to crawl under the bleachers. In the middle of all this stress, I'm still so tongue-tied that I can't talk to anyone. Scotts Valley High's 'Golden Couple' competition-which I want no part of-grates my nerves. I want to play football and baseball, then continue whatever gets me a college scholarship. Only Paige treats me as a normal person. People at school say she's quiet and closed-off, but she's nice to me. She's hiding her awesome self under baggy clothes and the brightest, pinkest hair I've ever seen. I don't understand why she's picked on, and I don't like it. Her medical bills are mounting, so I'm doing something about it. Paige and I pretend to date to remove ourselves from the rumor mill and win the Golden Couple's cash prize. What I don't expect is to catch feelings for my 'first trust,' the first friend I can open up to and be myself around...my girl Paige. Our moms were best friends. There wasn't much more to it than that. Every holiday, vacation and weekend, I was forced to spend time with Jax and his family. When I was four years old and he drenched my favorite blouse in ketchup, Jax and I became arch enemies...and then - somehow - we became best friends. But like I said, there wasn't much more to it than that. Mostly. Okay, so of course I liked him a little. How could I not? Even though Jax was annoying at times, he was also funny, athletic, popular, and downright hot, and I was his nerdy little best friend. He was my protector, the one who rescued me countless times from countless threats. We shared more than just friendship... Until the death of Jax's mother. The grief drove a wedge between us, and only so much more grief would follow. But pain has a way of tearing people apart, only to force them back together again. That's what happened to us. And, unfortunately, the only way around pain is through it. Trigger Warning: This book contains references to physical abuse and sexual trauma. Please read cautiously, and remember to take care of yourself.
