He came back because he wanted to visit her old friend misty and his mom, and brock Ash lost his kalos league so he decided to take a break from a few days/weeks... as he feel a weird feeling inside him he never felt this before... he was in love with his best friend..

Ash had lost to the Kalos League and he return back to Pallet Town,He was betrayed by his so-called friends and mother and his Pokemon.All of his Loyal Pokemon had been killed by the Taritors except one,Charizard.Arceus had taken his Chosen One title and give it to Cynthia,Filled with Hatred,Giratina had given Ash a Dark Aura.Now the world is in Chaos,Arceus blamed himself for abadoned Ash and now Cynthia has to do everything to restore Ash back to his sense.
