She went beyond the reef when she was sixteen and when Moana was thirteen. She didn't like the rule of people not going beyond the reef and she didn't want to continue to enforce that rule. She also found out something extraordinary about herself. so she left and Moana was next in line to become chief. Since then, everyone has presumed Kimi to be dead, except for Moana and Gramma Tala. So when she finally gets the chance to cross the reef four years later, she finds her sister and together, they must find Maui, demigod of the wind and sea, and restore the heart of Te Fiti.
