With both organizations after her, she has been living a nomad's life, constantly moving. The fear that they might catch up to her haunts Vanessa daily. After years like this, Vanessa finally found a job working for the Avengers, through one of her contacts on the street. She hides her past and attempts to hide her skills from them. But that doesn't last long. When her skills are exposed to the team, they start asking questions. The questions bring back not-so-pleasant flashbacks of her old life. Over time Vanessa and Steve grow closer, and he comforts her through the flashbacks and anxiety. But just as people are starting to care for her again, she pushes them away. The fear of hurting more people haunts her. So does her past. Vanessa doesn't think anybody could care about her, let alone love her. For who could love such Damaged Goods?
