She also wanted to put some distance between herself and her mother, hoping to avoid east coast nepotism in the surgery world. Meredith had a tough childhood growing up, causing her to be "dark and twisty" and to have commitment issues and not believe in love. Derek Shepherd (38) is the arrogant, workaholic Head of Neurosurgery at Seattle Grace. Derek has always cared more about his reputation in the surgery world more than anything else, other than his family. Derek avoids committed relationships, having no interest in finding something serious as it would affect his work and reputation. Although he has a good reputation in the surgery world, inside the hospital people try to avoid him at all costs. What happens when a young intern catches Derek's attention and makes him reconsider everything. The problem is, she doesn't seem interested in the angry and intimidating head of neuro, not to mention the fact that he is her boss.
