When the ferret suddenly comes back from the dead and attacks them, they have an entirely new set of problems on their hands. *** People always figured the apocalypse would come someday, but no one imagined it'd begin with a tainted batch of soap and a ferret. Not only do Jayson and Taylor have to fight off the suddenly-rabid animal, but things go from bad to worse when two of their friends find themselves trapped at work, staring down a gauntlet of ravenous "Soapies" looking for their next living meal. I am not from this planet. Hell, I am technically not from this galaxy. However, that doesn't change the fact I am here now, and my job is to save what I can on this forsaken planet and what's left of its inhabitants. The problem is that not everyone wants to be saved. I know what you're thinking. You can't save those who don't want to be saved. I bloody well agree. The ones who sent me don't care what you or I think, though. All they care about is numbers. They need a certain success rate to continue to get funding for their "expeditions" and "peacekeeping" efforts. I use both terms loosely here. However, that's what they put on their records, and it's what sounds good and looks suitable to their investors. So this is the way it's going to be. So be it! Oh, did I forget to mention the Universe decided I was the lucky girl to help find the one person who could save us all from self-destruction? Yea, that is a shitty idea, but once again, no one cares what I think.

[ONC 2021 Grand Winner] After the events of Ragnarök, the God Vidar has settled in the nice and quiet city of Antwerp where he keeps an eye on the local paranormal community. Nearly a millennium later, Vidar is a grumbling bookstore owner by day and a lazy paranormal detective by night (albeit a slightly furry one during a full moon). The morning after a particularly rough transition, the young teenage girl who normally wastes her days on the skatepark across the street enters his shop, fervently looking for a book on the legend of Brabo and Antigonus. As she struggles to pay, she reveals that the bronze giant has disappeared from the statue on the town square. At the foot of the fountain now lies a body that has been dead for three hundred years. Prompts chosen: (25) The war has ended, and thus the immortals return to their natural state: forgotten, hiding in the shadows until humankind is in need of them once more. They did not expect to be stumbled upon by a young farm apprentice. (*) (60) Rumours of a mysterious dark force under the earth have spread around the city. You are sent to investigate. (*) To fit the plot I have in mind, the young farm apprentice will become a bookstore "apprentice"

Complete. ONC 2021 entry. ONC Longlist and a Round II Ambassador's Pick! Exclusive to Wattpad. Ulthar is a cozy, sleepy town in the Dreamlands, close to the River Skai. It is a cobblestoned, gable-roofed town of pumpkin patches and a sizable population of cats. The only law is that you must never harm a cat, but the town is quiet and peaceful. Cats, humans, fish-people, and cosmic horrors live in unity. And really, the horrors are quite pleasant. Fourteen-year-old Eileen, who escaped the waking world, helps out at the chocolate shop and lives with her inventive adoptive mother, Cecilia Haunt. Besides the occasional cat, zoog, or animate pumpkin snatching the wares away, all is well. That is, until a mysterious eye statue appears in Ulthar. Every night, it moves to a different location. It's the sign of the Great Ones, who long ago left the dark palace of Kadath and went to the sunset city. Listless and hurt over the past, and desperate for an adventure to give herself a purpose, Eileen asserts that this is her chance to make a name for herself at the risk of her own safety and identity. Over the Garden Wall + H.P. Lovecraft's Dream Cycle.
