Aira Latch grew up differently, in a different village in a different school, and has always known that the simple pencil and paper were what was easiest to use. When Aira's village is bombed, she, her mother, and Mr. Graplin from across the road are the only ones to survive. Seeking refuge, they visit the technology obsessed town, hoping to be welcomed. And, although they are allowed to stay there, pencil and paper is not tolerated inside the wooden doors.
