"Amelia, you can't keep getting away with this."
"Bitch, I didn't ring you for a lecture."
I muttered, glancing at the stove clock.
"Yes, the fuck you did!"
Audrey shot back.
"I've spent three days listening to you spiral! And the last time I cosigned your shit and said 'fuck that man' and 'get over him', you got under him and let him fuck YOU-"
"So... city girls down?"
I winced, biting my nail to keep the phantom heat of that memory at bay.
"By a million, bitch, since you wanna be fucking funny while I'm irritated!"
Audrey tsked.
"Then you're staying at his godfather's house? I get he's a family friend, but what happened to 'fuck the police'?"
"Trust me, it's not like that at all."
I said, though my eyes drifted to the hallway.
"He's barely here."
"And what about your job?"
Audrey's voice dropped the humor, getting to the part I'd been avoiding.
"Elijah?"
"What the hell do you think?!"
...
"Real question-how good is that manic coochie for Broke Back to damn near signed his life away? Good thing I didn't try it out, I like my paper."
"Drea!"
I hissed, though I could feel my stomach getting knotted at the thought.
"Leave my pussy out of this!"
"Your 'hot-ass kitty-cat meow-meow' deciding who to purr it up to is the reason I'm in the mess too!"
I could hear the hard clicking of her nails tapping against her phone on the other end.
"I'm being serious! And you mean to tell me this same man then paid a prostitute? To cheat on you? The math ain't mathing. And you know I don't give a damn to take up for men."
"I know what I saw! If you looked at the pictures-"
"I'm not arguing what you saw,"
Audrey reiterated for the nth time.
"I'm pointing out that even after you tied his ass to a bed and left him for dead, he still paid your bail and didn't press charges. Maybe he's covering his tracks, but god, I'm toxic enough that all of that would've made me stay married."
