As you probably know, Exemplum and Parable are versions of Ink and Error, but with more animalistic traits, features, and instincts. This is true for all the characters in the book. As such, this raises a few problems: but those have already been solved. The "bad guys" are considered the predators, and are based off ocean creatures, where as the Star Sanses (Ink, Blue and Dream) take on more of a "prey" role, as they are all modeled after birds.
