But assignments are never as easy as they sound, and the stars are against Lyrani from the start. The deeper Lyrani delves into Nash's present, the more she learns of her past. Children of the God of War, the Seren of the Mountain believe in two things: might is power, and magic is sin. Yet in their hubris, the Clan has forgotten their most important role - to protect the most powerful weapons in all the realms from being unleashed upon the Mortal Realms once more. * * * Born with the Goddess's Blessing on her skin, the elders thought Eliah would be the second coming of Taiten, the greatest warrior the Clan has ever seen. What they got was a walking blasphemy. Eliah Taitenschild is short, skinny, and useless in a fight - and she's a magic-wielding heretic to boot. All she wants to do is pass her shieldmaiden training without having her magic exposed. Or better yet, complete the Rite and kill a demonic, shape-shifting Fal'mor to prove herself worthy of wielding one of the weapons that the legendary Taiten left behind. But a silent war between magic and might has been brewing on the mountain for decades. When new life is bled into the near-extinct army of Fal'mor in the name of proving strength, the Clan soon discovers that the weapons they were meant to guard were never the kind that could be wielded. Fortunately, for every weapon, there's a countermeasure. The magic that the Clan so detests may turn out to be the most powerful sword and shield of all. ============== 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲: This story was formerly published as 'Crossroads' (Apr 2014). I back up slowly as a man walks towards me. My hair on edge and I hear my mother scream for my father as she runs towards me. "Protect the coven" She screams as I see my father tackle the man as my mother carries me into the house. A shot rang out causing my ears to ring as we entered the house and into my newborn brother's room she grabs him and runs out the back door into the woods. She drops me gently as Kayden, my little brother starts to cry so I run on foot. I see my neighbor and his son which also happens to be my best friend running towards us. She hands Kayden to Jackson (Cole's father) and leans down to me hugging me tightly. "Mama has to go help Daddy. Take care of Kayden okay Lilith. We love you. We'll meet up again soon okay baby." She quickly turns away and runs towards our home. My best friend Cole pulls me and we start running. It's funny how they started off as our guests and now they are our neighbor and friend. Cole and his dad Jacksons family were hunted but we took them in. He was two years older than me so he was faster and I struggled to keep up. Another gunshot rang out and I whimpered. I ran almost tripping over tangles of branches. Soon my luck ran out and I tripped just as we reached the clearing where the van and the rest of the coven were gathered. I hit the ground so hard it knocked the air out of me. My vision blurred as I saw Cole fighting his dad to get to me but his dad was stronger even with Kayden in his arms. Cole was pulled into the van just as I felt a hand on my back. I see Damien staring from the front seat reaching out over his father who was driving as if he could grab me. The last thing I saw was the van was driving off a few gunshots going off right above me as I was losing consciousness. They left me. 10 years later:
