With a wife gravely ill and just a few weeks left before retirement, all Inspector Shig Sato wanted to do was work a few cases at his old police station with his friend and former partner, Ken Abe. But on his first night back, a waitress at a jazz club is murdered, and Sato finds himself as the lead investigator in a case that involves the American military, gangsters and wealthy industrialist. With an American Marine involved, there is a very good chance he has an international incident on his hands. Then there is the club owner’s father, a yakuza kingpin who was once Sato's childhood friend. Only Sato knows that he isindebted to the gangster because of his cooperation in solving one of Sato's cases many years before. Sato knows if the evidence points to the young club owner, the gangster will make demands that may prevent Sato from bringing the waitress’ killer to justice. When Sato realizes the club owner is the prime suspect, it becomes a race to see who will find the young man first, the gangsters or the police.
