Hadrian Potter-Black was not a normal wizard by any means. He found out he was the Master of Death (or equal in Deaths opinion) after going to Gringotts to pay for the damage he made with the dragon, he found out his inheritance and that the people he trusted most betrayed him. He was promptly pissed. So he went to get revenge only to be ganged up on and overpowered, and died. Instead of seeing his beloved godfather and parents he ended up in purgatory with Death.
