I fell in love with a physicist, and then we lost ourselves. Maybe there are places we can all be happy. We just need to find those places. Or maybe they don't exist.

Lilly Martin is not model-material, but Adam Hiller is, and it turns out he likes to wear dresses when nobody's looking, and is in fact not a 'he' at all. When their school announces a fashion designing competition, Lilly decides to kill two (or three) birds with one stone and: 1) Win the fashion competition by making the best dress Edgley High has ever seen. 2) Help Adam (who prefers Eve, thank you very much) come out as the girl she is. 3) Annoy the bigots. Hudson Ellis is good at his job. Somehow, he manages not to annoy people when he knocks at their doors and asks them to contribute to the charity he works for - instead, he gets them to sign up for sponsoring programmes and fish whatever spare change they have out of their pockets. Even the infamously tough residents of New York City are falling victim to Hudson's easy-going ways and wide smile; that is, until one woman renders him speechless with sarcastic refusals and slams her door in his face. Perhaps Hudson would be able to forget her - if it wasn't for the fact that she lives on the same floor of the next apartment over, and they both have floor-to-ceiling windows that allow for a rather generous view into each other's flats.

It's funny how life works. You make decisions based on who you trust and how much you trust them. You fall in love with the most unlikeliest of people. And as soon as everything is going so very well, the wheel stops turning forward and goes backwards. Everything that went up comes crashing down. Because gravity grounds us, even when we want to stay high. That's it's job. And it treats us all the same. short story: #61 (November 16th 2014) teen fiction: #271 (November 16th 2014) (2014)
