Due to his mother's death, Lucius Malfoy demanded Draco went to Durmstang to learn the dark arts that aren't provided at Hogwarts. It wasn't until his fourth year that Draco ended up in Hogwarts with his best mate, Viktor Krum. It wasn't until his fourth year that he met The-Boy-That-Lived.

Draco Malfoy is the son of the Death Eater Lucius Malfoy and so he has always been expected by his family as well as Voldemort himself to one day become a Death Eater. This tears Draco apart as he wishes for nothing of the sort. He wants no part in the evil Voldemort planned for him. He starves himself, cuts himself, and hates himself. He becomes agressive and lashes out at others. He isolates himself and pushes his friends away. Draco of course realizes his feelings way sooner than Harry and finding out that he's gay and for Harry Potter of all people takes a toll on Draco.
