And he especially hated Balloon. His annoying, high pitched voice, and how he feels so entitled to being salmon-colored or whatever. And all that keeps Nickel from spiraling is a chance to tease Balloon sometimes. And that's how it is. Or how it was, until Nickel saw Balloon's room door open. Until he saw Balloon crying on the floor, holding a pillow close. Until he read the letters Balloon had splayed out on the carpet. Until big, dumb, stupid Balloon finally leaned on his shoulder and he felt his chest melt.
