Ich erzähle es dir einmal und dann nie wieder, verstanden?“ Hailey nickte. „Wir wurden her gebracht um zu kämpfen.“ Verwirrt runzelte Hailey die Stirn. „Für wen?“ Mar grinste düster. „Sie sagen für den König. Aber ich glaube ihnen nicht. Die bescheißen uns.“ Sie zuckte mit den Schultern und zog sich einen kurzen Schlafanzug an. „Und warum machst du dann mit?“, fragte Hailey verwirrt. „Mir ist langweilig. Furchtbar langweilig. Und ich steh auf Sport.“ Das sah man ihr an. „Wir werden ausgebildet um irgendwann zu kämpfen. Die sagen, unsere Eltern wüssten davon.“ Sie lachte laut auf und fuhr sich durch die roten Haare. „Ich kann das nicht einschätzen. Meiner Mom bin ich egal, also würde sie so oder so nichts machen. Die sitzt nur auf ihrem faulen Arsch zu Hause rum.“ Hailey schluckte. „Aber meiner Mom wäre es nicht egal!“ Mar zog die Augenbrauen hoch. „Du heulst jetzt aber nicht, oder?“ Ein Kloß steckte in Hailey‘ s Halt fest. „Weil du neu bist, klar?“, sagte Mar, setzte sich zu ihr und legte den Arm um sie. Und da begann Hailey zu verstehen. Zu verstehen, warum sie hier war und das, das bereitete ihr bitterschwarze Erwartungen.
