Especially beacuse he has found out that he has developed feelings for his best friend. As Clay distances himself more and more from his old friendgroup George starts to get targeted by Clays new friends, who beat him up, leave mean comments and so on. At some point it gets to overwhelming for George.

Clay had been closeted all his life and planned for it to remain that way. But, with having homophobic parents it was seemingly impossible to ever find the happiness he longed for. After being outed to the only people he now disliked the most, his parents react worse than expected and Clay falls into a pit of loneliness when he gets sent to conversion therapy to "turn him straight again". George had homophobic parents too and goes through the same. When times are at its worst somehow these two meet each other and now they are isolated from reality in the therapy school.
