A Study in Scarlet is a 1887 detective novel by British author Arthur Conan Doyle. Written in 1886, the story marks the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, who would become two of the most famous characters in popular fiction. The book's title derives from a speech given by Holmes, an amateur detective, to his friend and chronicler Watson on the nature of his work, in which he describes the story's murder investigation as his "study in scarlet": "There's the scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it." DISCLAIMER: I do not own and did not write this story. It is a copy of Original Book by Robert Louis Stevenson that I have uploaded here because it was way better to read than the PDF I was given in school. But I decided to let it stay here to help spread the book to wider audiences. Hope you enjoy. ----- Author: Robert Louis Stevenson Publisher: Longmans, Green and Co. Year: 1886 ----- It is about a London lawyer named Gabriel John Utterson who investigates strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr Henry Jekyll, and the evil Edward Hyde. The novella's impact is such that it has become a part of the language, with the very phrase "Jekyll and Hyde" coming to mean a person who is vastly different in moral character from one situation to the next. ------------
