My head snaps forwards as a sound resonates throughout the silence. It sounded like a stick breaking. A feeling of panic climbs up my spine but I ignore it and pretend it was the rat, though I know it wasn’t. I start to hum to myself and I turn the bag upside down, the brown rat scurrying away and I watch as its yellow eyes slowly fade away but I don’t feel alone. You know that feeling you get when you feel like someone’s behind you but no one’s there? Yeah, that’s what’s happening right now. I squish the bag into a ball in my hands and turn around, walking slowly towards the front door but I freeze again as another sound breaks through my humming. There’s no one there, there’s no one there. I tell myself over and over again as I pick up my pace and by the time I get to my door i’m running.
