Fyra has always known that her town is cursed. Harvests fail, accidents cause injuries, and magic swirls through the streets, bringing chaos with it. This is all the fault of the Magician. He is one of the Blessed, magic from birth--and his Blessing is the ability to cast curses. Every year, those in the town who are discovered to be Blessed are sent to defeat him. None have yet returned. Fyra is one of the Blessed. She has the power to communicate with deathbirds--scavengers who have the uncanny ability to sense death's approach. Though she tries to hide what she is, the villagers discover her Blessing, and send her off with three other Blessed to defeat the Magician. But the journey ahead of her and her companions is difficult. Will they choose to turn aside? Will they succeed in their quest? But what of the mysterious journal she receives on her first day and the powers she posseses that no one understands?
