The way the world worked was different. No colors were seen past age 5, only black and white. However, meeting your soulmate would change the way you saw things. Everything would regain color, slowly, until all color can be seen. You could meet a stranger and suddenly in the coffee shop by your house, you notice a bright hue of pink from one of the flowers on a table. Then next time you see the stranger, you see the color in their eyes. But once your soulmate dies, everything in life becomes bland and colorless. Looking down the cereal aisle at the grocery store and seeing the bright colors of the boxes and then they fade away. You scramble for your phone and call your soulmate, the dial tone droning on and on until you hit the voicemail, tears falling quickly.
